It is within the realm of possibility that Dean is actually able to sense when Castiel is near.

I hadn't even considered this, but you're so right. Castiel pings Dean's sexdar, is what.

Sam later used the same nickname in 4.10: Heaven and Hell, which tells us it's entirely possible that Sam may have picked this habit up from Dean.LOL yes, that was my initial reaction too. How often has Dean referred to Castiel as Cas while speaking about him? How many of these conversations don't end up on screen? XD ( ... )

Yes to all of this, 4x07 did it for me and from the on the show has made it so easy, whether you see it as an intense friendship or something more.

Also this made me spit out my tea:
