I can't even tell you how great it was reading this manifesto.

I've always loved this show and I positively fell in love with Lenny during The Slow Child. (Though I should probably note that I don't think I've ever really seen any of the California episodes.)

Not too long ago, I remember briefly looking around for Laverne and Shirley fic because I've shipped Lenny and Laverne since I was little. I didn't find anything then and, in general, I never expect to find anything related to classic television shows so I gave up. Needless to say, I'll definitely be reading the recs.

I remember in a TV Land interview I saw, they asked Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams why the girls never got together with Lenny and Squiggy and they responded by saying that they had to be better than someone. That made me sigh because (at least with Laverne and Lenny) I thought that they brought out the best qualities in each other sometimes. I loved their relationship and how it seemed they would always be there for each other. I'm a sucker for couples that start as friends and become more, probably because I think its such a strong foundation to start from.

Anyway, thank you so much for putting this all together.

The Slow Child is about the most perfect episode at which to fall in love with Lenny - his character grows so much during that particular ep and the writers give him such great depth.

I'm glad I managed to hook you up with the archive link - I hope you'll come join us over at the site and board :) . The fandom itself is pretty obscure and small, and my site's the only big resource going at the moment, so I'm not surprised you couldn't find recs before this.

I've seen those interviews - I share your sigh. Penny usually follows that up with "I thought they were gonna be our boyfriends!", but apparently the "we need someone to look worse than you!" rationale was mostly Garry Marshall's. Squiggy/Shirley is an intriguing 'ship in of themselves, but Lavenny, IMOHO, works on a level all by itself because it's got a lot of mutuality going for it, just like you pointed out.
