Off the top of my head, I can think of about five ongoing longer stories in the Supernatural fandom. I'm just mentioning the ones that have been going for at least a few parts, since that seems to be kind of what you want.
Demon Country is by far my favorite of these. False Comforts is extremely well written, but it's too heavy on the angst for me (I like angst, but this is more like hopeless situation angst, and bone crushing) and her style tends to bore me a bit - she's very flowery and I find myself skimming a lot to get to the action. It might also be hard for a new-to-the-series person to understand.
Things My Brother Taught Me is probably next on the list - it's pretty well written, entertaining, but I feel it's slightly OOC (especially Sam) and I always have trouble believing fics that have the brothers together before Sam went to Stanford. Personal preference there, but it strikes me as unlikely. Also, in this fic, Sam is 11 and Dean is 15 (or somewhere thereabouts) when they start having a sexual relationship, and that particular thing hits one of my slight squicks, so just a warning. It's not too deep into series detail.
Haunted and Send Angels are both written by authors that could use a little polishing. Neither series is really terrible (I happen to like SA better) but they do need some work. Nevertheless, they're probably also both reasonably simple for the audience new to the series.
There's the one you mentioned by deannaz, Send Angels, Demon Country as linked above, Haunted, and the False Comforts series.
