Title: The Soldier and His Sunshine Pairing: Malcolm Reynolds/Kaylee Frye Fandom: Firefly/Serenity Spoilers: The original series. No spoilers for the Serenity movie.
This was really thoughtful and whatnot, and I'd respond more articulately if I weren't going, "Alixtii's a boy? Alixtii's male? Really? Really?" Color me flabbergasted. And also, obviously, incredibly slow.
LOL! One of the delights of fandom is the chance to be the Other for a while. Helps me to recognize my white/male/het/etc. privilege for what it is--and to reaffirm my desire to work for a world where such privilege no longer exists.
I'm admittedly incredibly easy to sell on this ship, simply because my OTP happens to be Simon/Inara. But this right here?: And, of course, the deepest thing they have in common: Serenity. In truth, my OTP is really an OT3, because Serenity is always there, a very real presence in the relationship. Nails it. You're absolutely right when you point out that how much they have in common, especially Serenity.
Great essay, and there are some fics on that list that I've never seen before, so yay!
I don't mind Mal/Saffron or Simon/Kaylee, but I actually actively dislike Mal/Inara. I'm not sure why; they just seem so wrong for each other. Simon/Inara...you could very easily sell me on that. They do fit together rather well, and there's foundation in canon.
Thought-provoking essay, I think that this is a spot on assesment of Kaylee: Kaylee embodies each of the three theological virtues-faith, hope, and love and you've raised some really key elements about why Mal/Kaylee resonates, from how they interact to each other and their world in canon, and, very much, how Serentiy binds them together.

Mal and Kaylee bring out the best in each other. Mal and Inara bring out the worst in each other. Mal and Kaylee would rather be on Serenity than anyplace else. Simon would certainly rather be anywhere else and goodness knows why Inara *is* there during the series timeline.
