» »challenge 01 - pick a card, any card;
The challenge was to pick a card as inspiration for an icon. We had to use various elements from a card, but the icon could not look like a card.
I finished this icon within hours of the challenge going up because I was immediately inspired and had a composition in mind. The black splotches/line were a last minute addition to add a little extra to the rather empty background (though there's a faint paper texture in it). The text, which says "lady luck" is my handwriting. I think I rewrote that 6 or 7 times before it looked the way I wanted it to. Unfortunately, the comments I received on the icon found the text hard to read.

» »challenge 02 - the one armed bandit;
This challenge was based around slots. We had to pick one of three slot symbols for our criteria, but we could include the criteria for the others for bonus points. I chose fruit for my main criteria which only needed to be bright colors, but I picked an image with fruit in it for added oomph. For the gold bars criteria we had to use the provided texture which is only barely visible in my icon. For the $$$ criteria we had to include a currency symbol of some sort in the icon. I used the ¥ symbol really large in lime green in the background, but in a script font, so it looks like a cursive Y with two lines through it. The image also had to be duplicated at least once in the icon, so I did a mirrored copy, but put the two copies off center.
For the bonus icon we had to use lyrics from a song called "Slow Motion". I decided, like most everyone else, to use "an apple a day". I searched apple on minitokyo and picked an image I liked that was also shoujo. As for the composition, I really wasn't sure what to do, so I just fumbled around until I had something I was somewhat happy with.

There was a lot of criteria we had to meet for this challenge, both for the main criteria and the bonus criteria. One of the bonus criteria was for the icon to be dramatic, so I picked a dramatic scene from Usagi Drop to icon. Since I hadn't been doing too well in the round, I figured I may as well take chances and do something I don't often do, which is manga coloring. I'm still not terribly confident about my coloring skills, but I did get some nice compliments on it for this icon, which did give me a slight boost.
I'm not even entirely sure what I was thinking when I put the icon together, but it was 90% trial and error and a lot of nudging/ajustments.

» »challenge 04 - going all in;
As soon as the challenge was posted I had an idea for the composition of the three icons - which was to make it look like a slot machine. It took me several days to decide what I wanted to use for the subject, but once I did, it didn't take too long to make the icons. I edited some slot machine picture I found on google which had a face which I replaced with the treble clef.
I tried to, without fussing with animating, to give it a look that the machine was in motion. I think I did a good job in accomplishing this, but it took some finagling to figure out the order of the images vertically so that they matched up properly when I added them in above and below the main image for each. All in all I was pleased with how the set came out, but individually the icons look a little odd.
