So, I thought I'd take a page out of
astrokittie and
kawaii_chicken's book and give this LIMS write-up thing a try.
Unfortunately, something went down with
vg_battle and I can't get all the information on each of the challenges, so things might not be as exact as I'd prefer them to be. At the time the voting for the final challenge went up,
astrokittie and I were fighting it out for first and second place with only a few points separating us. Who won? We'll never know.
I signed up with the alias Anne Serina from Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier.

» »challenge 01 - Brand New Days;
For the main challenge we had to make an icon that was primarily yellow and used a frame texture. I decided it would be fun to have a character sitting on the edge of the frame, so I scoured through images to find someone sitting in just the right way to get the effect I wanted. After a hellish extraction of feathery hair and other tiny details, plus transforming/rotating her and the frame to get it exactly right, I was too lazy/tired to redraw her right hand, so I just slapped text over it.
For the bonus challenge we had to make a community icon. I really dislike making community icons because not only can they not be used as is by anyone else, but picking what to icon is such a pain. ESPECIALLY in multi-fandom communities like this one. But if there's one thing I learned in round 5 of
vg_battle it was that people loved making Final Fantasy icons. So I decided to go that route and picked a promo image for Dissidia because it was easier than picking a character or characters from one of the many other Final Fantasy games.

» »challenge 02 - When I Grow Up;
For this challenge we had to icon a character and include text about the profession they have. I decided that it would be fun to icon someone from Persona 4 because several of the characters wore multiple "hats"/professions and I thought including a list of occupations would be a cute way to meet the requirements. I settled on Rise because I thought it would be cooler to include "Idol" instead of any of the slightly more mundane jobs the other characters held.
I used a lot of different textures and brushes to get the background made as I wanted something dynamic, but not too distracting from the text.

» »challenge 03 - Pikette's First Kiss;
There were a lot of bonus point requirements for this which included a non-human character, primarily pink, using the provided texture and I think there might have been a love related text requirement, but I could be remembering incorrectly. Anyway. I went through all my video game images looking for a non-human character that would work well in a primarily pink icon. Once I found that image, I did everything I could to get all the bonus requirements in. I was not thrilled with how it turned out, but at least it wasn't blurry, over-sharpened, or too dark so I figured I'd do okay enough on it to get through the challenge and not drop in the rankings.

For this challenge we had to make a "bright" icon of a bad guy and for a bonus icon we could make a "dark" icon of a good guy. So I went to Dissidia for both of these icons because I knew I just had to use Kefka for my bad guy and Warrior of Light for my good guy icon as they both fit well with the color requirements of the challenge. It's hard to get a brighter, more vibrant bad guy than Kefka, and the image I used for Warrior of Light lent itself quite well to a darker icon.
I tried to get as much of Kefka in the icon without losing too much detail, but I should have gone for a wider crop because this one didn't leave much room for anything aside from some background texture work. For the second icon, I extracted all the other characters from the original image leaving just WoL and the rocks he stood on. After cropping the image and saving it, I opened up the original image again and cropped part of the sky background from the image to put behind him. I used one of my favorite textures to get the lighting effects around the edges and slapped some rather uncreative text on because it felt like it needed something more.

» »challenge 05 - Copy an icon;
For this icon we were shown 4 icons and we had to copy at least one (but it might have been 3) element(s) from any of them to make our icon. One of the icons had a cross in the background, so I decided I would use that for one of my elements. Then I decided to use a red, white and blue color scheme from another icon, and a center crop from one of the other icons, and a light texture from the other. After I decided on the elements I was going to use, I went through my Soejima Shigenori Artworks 2004-2010 scans because I remembered there were several Persona 3 images that used primarily blue and white coloring. I selected Chidori and Junpei because they brought in all three colors I wanted in the first place and would lend themselves well to the rest of my ideal composition. Then it was simply a matter of putting everything together.

» »challenge 06 - Manipulation & Simple;
For the final challenge we had to make an icon of our identity character and make changes to their appearance. I think we got bonus points for each additional change we made up to so many points, plus we got a bonus point for using the same image we signed up with.
This was the full size manipulation of
this original image. I had a lot of fun making that manipulation and then turning it into an icon.
For the bonus icon we had to make a simple icon. No brushes, no textures, no text, no gradients. Just a crop and adjustment layers. I decided that since I was playing Shadows of the Damned (at that point only a rental copy), I'd make an icon from that game. I made a couple alternates which I'll include in my next icon batch.
