"wow...it's...pink...."

Yeah, that's what a friend of mine had to say after seeing this debacle.

So you're wondering how the hell I came up with this? Easy - I was doing some shopping for Anime USA (less than a month to go, folks!) and came across this. My wife, safe to say, hates it. Frankly, I'm probably even more offended than she is and based on looking at the item page over at Toys Я Us, I'm not sure of whether to be more disgusted by the makers of this tripe or by the reviewers.

For those of you wanting a quicker description, here it is:

This is Monopoly like you have never seen it - dressed up in pink and all about things girls love! Buy boutiques and malls, go on a shopping spree, pay your cell phone bill, and get text and instant messages. You and your friends will adore the funky tokens, cool buildings, and cute illustrations. Best of all, the game is stored in a beautiful keepsake box which doubles as a jewelry box. Cool game features include: 8 collectible tokens just for girls, keepsake storage box with removable tray and mirrored insert, pink gameboard with fun properties, pink and purple translucent boutiques and malls instead of houses and hotels, Instant Message and Text Message cards instead of Chance and Community Chest, pink Title Deed cards, redesigned Monopoly money, flocked banker's tray, 2 pink dice, and instructions. Paint the town pink with Toys R Us Exclusive!

WTF. Seriously. Why on earth do girls get to be demeaned by this (as though all they care about is malls and paying cell phone bills) while guys get to be the tycoons with the regular edition? What does that say about our treatment of girls - that we should just let them loose on the malls and they can't handle the boardroom? Let's flip it a bit: the Easy Bake Oven is still all about girls, even though statistics have proven that more bakers and chefs are men. So why isn't this gender neutral then? Oh - because only women can be homemakers (which traditionally includes cooking at home). Bullshit. But tell that to the marketing idiots and old shirts over at these companies, some of whom probably still think it's 1953.

If they wanted to sell a "kinder, gentler" version of Monopoly, what about bringing over the Hello Kitty version? But no, far easier to insult girls than it is to shell out money for a license, it seems - strange, since you can make a ton of cash from the anime angle with the Hello Kitty version.

And the sad part is, this isn't the only atrocity. There's a version of Jenga that's gone girly-girl as well.

EDIT: Apparently, I'm not the only one who dislikes it either. The folks over at this place aren't too happy about it either, and they also mention the Hello Kitty version.
