Choke

Today I landed a job with Milwaukee Public Schools as an Administrative Assistant (no, I don't work with kids, I work at an office, not a school). To celebrate this, Taryn and I went out to eat at the Olive Garden near me.

We arrived at the restaurant the waiting room was somewhat full. So, after answering the urgent questions of the wait-staff, we found a seat at the only available bench.... right next to the wait-staff that greet you as you enter the door. We were sitting there for only a few moments when a woman came running/walking fast out of the dining room area asking loudly if there was a doctor in the restaurant. Not being a doctor, I didn't do much. She quickly changed her question to be "Does anyone know how to do Heimlich?" At this, a woman got up and said "I do" and followed the first woman back into the dining room.

I figured that the first woman was patron of the restaurant--someone who was sitting with the choking person and ran to find help.
This wasn't the case.

After a few minutes the first woman came back to the lobby, and walked up to the wait-staff area (where Taryn and I were sitting behind) and informed the rest of the wait-staff "In a situation like that, the action is to just stand back... it's hard but the liability is too much" When one of the wait-staff inquired as to what she meant, she went on to describe "...they'll come back and sue us..."

It was about then that I realized that this person was wearing a nametag and was obviously some sort of manager at this restaurant.

My comment to Taryn later was "You could fire me, but I wouldn't sit back and watch someone die."
