[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Kaywinnit Lee "Kaylee" Frye
FANDOM: Firefly
CHRONOLOGY: ...I'll match it up with Simon's canonpoint, keep it simple.  "Safe," 1x05.
CLASS: Hero.
SUPERHERO NAME: n/a
ALTER EGO: Just Kaylee Frye.  Mechanic of awesome.

BACKGROUND:
The 'verse Kaylee was born into was in many ways divided, even after the War of Unification.  The Core planets were well-to-do and advanced, the Rim planets unrefined and often poor.  Kaylee grew up on one of these planets, called Harvest, and never thought of leaving as a girl.  She'd always been a daddy's girl, and often helped him fix whatever needed fixing - that was his work, after all - though she never received proper mechanical training; she seemed to have an intuitive gift for it, and she left school earlyish to help out.  This often took people by surprise, that a slip of a girl was better with engines than her two older brothers.  Even with her clear superiority in regards to machines, she was still their baby sister and they treated her as such.  They were never particularly close (they were older enough not to know what to do with her, really, and a tiny bit of jealousy was present too), but what affection there was came easy.

The firefly-class transport Serenity, captained by Independent war veteran Malcolm Reynolds, had parked on the planet for repairs, and Kaylee, always free with such things, was sexin' the ship's current mechanic Bester.  In the engine room, no less.  (As Bester explained, “engines make her hot.”)  Mal happened to walk in on them and, after berating Bester for not being able to fix the problems he'd been struggling with, he allowed Kaylee to take a shot a fixing said problems.  She'd seen them "when [she] was down there on her back," after all, and in moments did the necessary repairs.  She was hired instantly, and by day's end, after consulting her parents (her daddy thought she was foolish not to take the chance, although her mama was a tiny bit hesitant, having never entirely understood Kaylee's fondness for engines and feeling a bit skeptical of the way she got hired), she was on board and Bester fired.  Though seeing the 'Verse hadn't been a goal of hers, she found she enjoyed it, and developed a deep affection for Serenity (even early on, always "her" or "she" or "my girl," never just "the ship") and her crew: Mal, a better big brother than either of hers, and Jayne and Wash and Zoe.

Often the crew was wrapped up in a firefight, and Kaylee stayed out of those.  She just wasn't good with guns or killing, period.  Didn’t bother her too much when the others got wrapped up in it, but she plain refused, and the others, Mal especially, wanted to keep their sweet l’il Kaylee out of trouble too.  But she played at least supporting roles in most of the less-than-legal endeavors Mal lined up for the crew, not fussed by that in the slightest.  She and Wash, the pilot, often maneuvered the technical backup, and he served as a pseudo-brother of another sort, someone she could girl talk with in a way.  They spoke the same language, rather, and appreciated that about each other, especially when the others just looked at them with blank stares when they went off.

When Inara Serra, a registered Companion, started renting one of the shuttles to expand her client base, Kaylee quickly became friends with her.  In many ways, they were different: Inara the refined, glamorous, and worldly woman, the jǐejǐe like she'd never had, and Kaylee still somewhat of a girl, silly and happy and good at fixing just about anything technical but still fluttery about interpersonal things to an extent, even with her come-and-go bravado.  They complimented each other, though, and finding Kaylee in Inara's shuttle getting her hair brushed while they had girl talk wasn't uncommon in Serenity’s slower moments.

Serenity took on several passengers their next stop at Persephone, about eight months after Inara came on board.  One was a shepherd called Derrial Book, who immediately won Kaylee over with fresh strawberries and a good nature; Simon Tam was a doctor carrying a mysterious package, soon revealed to be his little sister River, recently rescued from an Alliance experimental facility disguised as a school.  There was also Laurence Dobson, part of the Alliance tracking the Tams, and in the course of his attempting to capture River, Kaylee was shot in the belly.  Simon used stitching her up as somewhat of a bargaining chip, but saved her life, and even after this Kaylee had somewhat of a crush on the proper, pretty doctor.

The Tams and Shepherd Book soon became part of the crew; a medic was convenient to have, and Shepherd proved useful in ways, even if the captain didn't much fancy his religiosity.  River was damaged to say the least, but Kaylee had a friendly rapport with her that the others didn't seem to manage quite as much (just proving that no matter the sort, Kaylee would make friends).  Everyone continued to go about things as they had, though having fugitives aboard did complicate matters.  Kaylee even got to play arm candy when Mal attended a fancy ball to make contacts for crime, loving the chance to get dolled up and feminine in the "layer cake" dress she'd lost her heart to in a shop window.

When, on the planet Jiangyin, Simon and River were kidnapped by settlers on the hill so he could be their community's doctor, the rest of the crew turned their ship around to rescue them, though leaving them would have been easy enough.  Kaylee, other than just wanting to look out for them seeing as they were crew, was very glad not to leave Simon behind before anything could come of it.

PERSONALITY:
Kaylee is sunshine in the black, and she wears her heart on her sleeve. That's the easiest way to sum up the way she seems to others, and though she very occasionally gets gloomy or offended, it doesn't last long.  The gloom she keeps to herself, for the most part, and it usually only comes about if those she loves are hurt somehow.  The offended (admittedly, it's not too hard to offend her if you're, say, Simon or the captain, but she tries to take most people with a grain of salt) usually wears off after her attempt at a somewhat-cutting remark is made, maybe a tiny hint of purposeful ignoring whoever offended her.

The rest of the time (about nine times of ten, really) she's happy as can be, trying to stay optimistic and often cheering others into the bargain.  This can be occasionally frustrating, especially to those who insist on being pessimistic and cranky, but for the most part it's endearing.  Keeping her happiness to herself is harder for her, as she likes to spread a good mood around, but if she knows it would directly hurt someone around her, she can hold back some.

She makes friends with just about everyone, too, or she's willing to.  No matter how rotten of an attitude they project, no matter how tough they try to seem, no matter what terrible things they've done in the past, she tries to see the best in them.  It's only when they've hurt one of her people that she's skeptical about them; even when it comes to those who've hurt her direct she might be persuaded to give them a second chance.  She also refuses to hear when they badmouth themselves, or at least to take it to heart; what she knows to be true about someone is always what she believes, and she tries to be a good judge of character, although her optimism can blind her to things occasionally.  She's very loyal to them she cares for, and would do just about anything for them, even when it means taking up arms or some other thing she's not entirely comfortable with on her own account.

Kaylee's attitude towards life is very happy-go-lucky.  If a thing makes her happy, she feels, why not do it?  This leads to a fairly open sexuality, among other things, and her repeated romantic strikeouts with Simon don't just make her mopey, they make her legitimately sexually frustrated.  In her way of thinking, his "propriety" is just foolish, as it stands in the way of what (she hopes) he wants and what she wants into the bargain.

Other than Simon, she doesn't much care for what others might have to say about what she does or how she is; so long as they like her and they're happy around her, she's happy.  So long as she has the chance to cheer them up, she's happy.  She's really very simple that way, and although she isn't particularly educated (and this much is clear given her worldview and her slangy, occasionally countrified way of talking) she's very intuitively bright.  She doesn't necessarily come off the most intelligent, but get her talking and she's clearly -- well, street-smart isn't quite right, as there's plenty of things she's naive about.  But what she does know she knows intimately.

POWER:
Though it isn't found in regards to computers and the like, Kaylee has a sort of technopathy.  She can take most anything apart, put most anything back together, and do so quicker and more efficiently than your ordinary someone.  When a thing needs fixed, too, she can do so in ways that don't seem quite to adhere to conventional principles; if a part would otherwise be needed, she can work it without, and so on.

A mild empathy can also be found, though she can't control the feelings of others, merely perceive them.  This is occasionally spotty, however, and can easily be confounded.

COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:
--wo de tian a, this... this ain't right.  This ain't Serenity, this ain't even where last we were parked.

This don't make sense, none t'all --

I ain't a hero.

I ain't brave, I ain't darin', I ain't tough.  I don't even like guns, I don’t fight good, I...

Someone else woulda been a better choice f'this, this -- whatever this is, wherever.  I don't do good with things like this, I don't, I'm better off with the others -- where are the others?  They're gonna worry, I'm gonna worry 'bout if they're gettin' on okay, an' Serenity, they ain't gonna know what to do with her, not really.

I don't gotta choice here, do I.  Gotta find my way 'round, gotta... take it as it comes.

…Rutting hell, I hope I ain't alone.

LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:

It had been a long sort of night, and not a one of them was rested nor relaxed.  Kaylee had been more worried for the captain than herself, even as Badger’s men were pushing her along with one hand and fondling a knife with the other.  If nothing else had come of being shot, there was the small fact that knives didn’t quite scare her as much now.  Couldn’t hurt more than a bullet had.  Or she hoped, anyhow, she was telling herself to play brave round those thugs.
Soon’s they got back to Serenity, though, she could slip into the background the others provided.  Zoe and Jayne were all bravado, Wash was all sarcasm.  All that was ever expected of her was to sit and wait, fix Serenity when they needed and rig her up to help with their work, say something sweet, stay out of too much trouble.  Nobody asked any more of their mèimei, and now was no different.  Maybe it was cowardly of her, but she sort of liked it better that way.

She frowned to take her dress off (her dress, she was still proud of that) but she knew none of them would say a thing if she left the ribbon in her hair, at least.  She didn’t want the party to end, even though it so clearly had, and ended with the captain being forced to take on a swordfight and Badger and his men holding them more or less hostage in their own ship, no less.  And she’d felt such a present in that dress, a feeling she wasn’t quite used to and one she was finding she adored.  She’d sort of wished that Simon would unwrap her, but especially with all going on that was neither likely nor appropriate.  The tiny half of a smile he gave when she came back out, equal parts politeness and nerves with what she hoped was an undercurrent of “you’re pretty,” was the best she could hope for.  Brushing her leg against his as they sat playing cards was the closest they’d get tonight, and he didn’t even seem to notice (even as it made her bite her lip with desire - course it would be Jayne noticed, and just had to roll his eyes like he did).

Sitting around like they were made Kaylee sort of nervous, really.  The concentrated quiet that came from not wanting to say anything that’d turn bad gave her mind more license to wander.  Being Kaylee, too, she didn’t feel it right to unload her worrying on the others, even if the situation had been better suited to it.  She’d been saving up details of the party in her head to share over and over, but sharing silly sorts of things was a different matter entirely than anxieties that wouldn’t help anyone, wouldn’t help them plan and wouldn’t help them keep calm.
It was times like these she felt so naïve, so gorram useless.  This wasn’t even the sort of plan she could help much with, t’was all guns and daring.  Nobody faulted her for it.  They liked that she was their innocent little darling, that she put a light in their lives, they wouldn’t change it if there was another choice.
She couldn’t help but be glad seeing the captain return, though.  Such a plan as they had, well-thought out as it’d been, was still better just a plan.  The fewer gunshots there were in a day the better, far as she thought.

FINAL NOTES ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:
I'm a cheap, silly person, and I've got extra icons for her stored at baobeikaylee , if that's okay.

Some of the details, especially about her growing up, are also pure headcanon.
