Darla sipped at her milkshake, trying hard not to frown. “You’re not saying anything, and you keep staring at me,” she said unhappily. “Maybe this was a mistake...”
Bernard startled and shook his head. “No, no!” he denied. “I’m sorry, Darla, it’s just... What am I to say? So... you're alive-ish? That's... that good. Great, actually. So, how ARE you?”
“Just treat me like a normal person!” she nearly shouted then brought he voice down when she saw the people in the diner staring. “Look, I’m still me, just a little different. I sorta...help people now.”
“Like Batman and Robin help people?” Bernard asked, raising an eyebrow. “Doesn’t quite sound your style, Darla.”
“I’ve grown up a bit,” she admitted. “I’m not so self-absorbed anymore... I could have gotten people killed at our school by just being there during that gang war... Tim could have...”
Bernard placed a hand on her shoulder. “Drake’s all right, you know? Nothing happened to him. Actually, he goes by Wayne now. He’s Bruce Wayne’s newest adopted kid.”
Darla looked up and blinked. “Really? Wow,” she murmured. “I’m glad he’s okay, but how’ve you been? You didn’t get hurt during the school shooting, did you?”
Bernard shook his head. “I didn’t, and it’s really weird hearing you say it was just a shooting. It was the day you died,” he said quietly. “That’s how I’ll always remember it.”
“Oh, Bernard,” Darla whispered before leaning over to place soft kiss to his lips. “I’m here, and I’m okay. See?”
A smile crept onto Bernard’s lips. “Yeah, I see fine,” he replied.
