It had been a few months since that night Roy went out to share a pack of nics with Hayley. Since then, he's kicked the habit, and now he's not even living on his own anymore. Roy lived in an orphanage most of his life, but he ditched once he could. He met Hayley, and things had started to look up for a while.
He was wrong then, so he knew not to trust his stay at manor. Sure, the butler was awesome, and he got to learn that he loved archery (and was good at it), but how long would a charity case like him be kept around? Not for long, he was sure, so Roy thought it was better to split on his own before he got kicked to the curb.
Roy decided to leave in the middle of the night, but he didn't expect to almost get hit by a flashy car in the driveway on his way out. He, luckily, jumped out of the way, though it seemed the car stopped right before it would have hit him.
“Oh god, I'm sorry,” a feminine voice said as the car door opened and shut before the girl ran over to him. “What were you doing in this driveway in the middle of the night?”
Roy ran a hand through his black hair and looked up to see a beautiful red head, so he grinned up at her. “Just leaving, but if you're gonna be here, I think I could stick around,” he said flirtatiously.
The red head snorted as she helped off the ground. “Funny, kid, now what are you doing on this property?” she asked sternly.
Just when he was going to protest to be called a kid, someone cut in. “Why Miss Gordon, we weren't expecting you tonight,” Alfred spoke up as he walked down the driveway from the the manor's main doors before looking over at Roy. “And Mister Harper, shouldn't you be in bed?”
Roy flushed as Barbara hid a laugh behind her hand. “He lives here?” she asked before Roy could protest being treated like a child; he was eighteen now.
“Yes, Miss Gordon,” Alfred stated as he led them to the door. “He's been here since that dreadful incident a few months ago.”
“Oh,” she answered quietly as they made their way into the house.
After that, Barbara quieted a bit, and Roy wasn't sure why. Though, at that moment, he did decide he wanted to find out why.
Returning to manor was rather bittersweet. All the time she had spent there with Dick had made it almost a second home to her, but after Dick's death, it just seemed painful. Even Bruce didn't help much since when she had returned from her vacation with her father, he was out being Batman. Alfred was sweet, but there was only so much the butler could do to keep the house from feeling like a mausoleum.
Barbara just wanted to get away since she mainly came to greet Alfred and tell Bruce she had returned. Mostly, she was looking forward to maybe joining Batman on the streets to unwind. Unfortunately, that wasn't on the agenda. She hadn't planned for Roy Harper to be there, but after talking to him for a bit, she found maybe sticking around wouldn't be so bad after all. Though, bittersweetly, she thought as she chatted with him, that Dick would have liked this guy too.
