Title: Warm Welcome
Fandom: DCU
Character(s): Steph, Cass (mentions of Dick and Tim)
Pairing(s): pre-Steph/Cass
Word Count: 689
Genre: general/friendship
Rating: PG/K+
Notes: More belated b-day fic. Happy (very) belated birthday, milleniumrex! He gave me three things to pick from, and I picked Steph/Cass - rooftop tag. (Also works for my dcu_freeforall prompt #10, 'welcome home.') Steph left Gotham. Now she's returned to see what has changed and what really hasn't. (Post-BftC speculation, blah, blah, blah.)

Steph had moved away from Gotham for many reasons. She would never admit that Tim was one of them as much as she wouldn't admit that she missed Gotham terribly. Steph tried not to keep up with the news because it would be too painful to watch the city fall apart.

Eventually, after a few months of avoiding the news wherever she went, he mother announced that Gotham was safe again. Once she did, Steph couldn't help but catch up on all that she had missed. She found out there was a new Batman and a new Robin, which made her worry for Tim. She then noticed Nightwing was still being spotted, which confused her. She thought he would have taken up the mantle for sure.

The next day after digging for news bites and media about Gotham, Steph's mom announced they were moving back to Gotham. Steph guessed she wasn't the only way who irrationally missed Gotham. Once they moved back, that night Spoiler was sneaking in the shadows again. Yes, Tim had told her to never do this again, but why should she listen now? Things had obviously calmed down, and she didn't even know if Tim was...

Steph swallowed a lump in her throat as she hesitated on the rooftop, about to jump to the next one. Did she really want to know what happened? Yes, she did. Did Bruce come back? Were there any casualties? Who was the new Batman? She wasn't sure if any of these questions would get answered, but Steph had to try.

Before she could jump to the next roof top, someone jabbed her hard on the shoulder. Steph spun around to see a black cape disappear down into an alley. Curious and on guard, Steph jumped after the figure, wondering who it was. Once in the alley, she saw the cape again, this time turning a corner. She chased after the caped person, reaching for the cape only to miss grasping it by a few inches. When Steph finally made it around the corner, the person was gone.

The next night, Steph went out to gather information again. She stuck to shadows, and she noticed Nightwing patrolling with Red Robin. Steph could tell Nightwing was who he always was since no one else could bend that way or have an ass that looked half as good in that costume. It was Red Robin that confused her. He moved familiarly, but she wasn't sure who it was, until she saw how closely he worked with Dick. Red Robin was definitely Tim Drake under that cowl.

Satisfied that she knew half of what she wanted to know, Steph set off to go through another part of Gotham to look for Batman. If both Nightwing and Red Robin were on this side of town, Batman and Robin must be on the other side. It was only logical, and everything the batclan was logical. Well, usually, it was anyway.

Before Steph made it to other side of town, she felt the familiar jab to her shoulder as the night before. She spun around to see bat ears and a cowl. Her brows furrowed behind her mask as she chased the figure. It couldn't be who she thought, because well, they hadn't really talked since Steph's miraculous come back from the dead. Why would she want anything to do with her?

“Batgirl...?” Steph called out hesitantly.

The shadow paused before turning around, come out to reveal herself. She silently regarded Steph who swallowed thickly and didn't move as Batgirl moved and tapped her shoulder again, with the same force as the last jabs.

“Tag,” Cass stated quietly grinning under her cowl, the mask showing her smile before she took off from another rooftop.

Steph stood for a moment before grinning herself. Maybe she was wrong. Yeah, she was definitely wrong. It didn't matter how long they hadn't talked or seen each other. Cass was still Cass, and she still believed Steph to be her friend. That was good enough for Steph as she vaulted to the next rooftop to catch up with Cass.
