Walking the halls Heide had a plethora of Military information coursing through his brain. He hadn't been in this good of a mood since he left Midgar for his place of residence near north crater. His position as military advisor had him feeling younger than ever and his life was moving towards social again. There was so much new life in the company ( Read more... )

"Gyahahahaha, Like working. That is a good one Lass. No one likes working. Well, okay, I do. I like my job. Shi...Hel...French fries and ice cream I love my job! It's good to see you younglings at such an age looking forward to the future. Yer faces all bright and young. Yer look a little uh. Did i catch you off guard? I'm rightfully sorry if i did Little Miss." Heide stopped and tried to look as jovial as possible.

"I been around these halls for a very long time and I've seen a lot of people who worked very hard. People I liked and people i didn't. Some of the hardest working people were the ones that I didn't like. -cough- Of course those are stories for adults for another time. You look like a smart kid. In my day all the smart kids were placed in the SCI. Dep. Ehhem I mean the Science Department Headed by Professor Hohmmm.... Hmm, Just some old smart guy." Heide stopped himself as he realized he was falling back in to old habits when it came to the departments.

Heide reached in a bag behind him and produced a single red rose. "Now these roses are for a special purpose but since i asked for extra ... I guess you can have the one. Every lady deserves a rose." Heide beamed a genuine smile as he held the rose out to the young lady.

It was uncanny, the different facets of people. How many at Shinra had ever seen Heidegger...smile this way? There was grey in the big man's hair and beard now; Joey tried to calculate how old he must be. Fifties? Sixties? Grandfather age. Had he always been this... paternal?

A muscle twitched slightly at the side of her mouth - she was caught between the desire to run and the desire to laugh. Joey hesitated before taking the rose, feeling mildly nauseous. How strange this situation would be, if viewed by someone who knew her identity!

"Um. Thanks. It's very...pretty," she said, bringing the bloom to her nose and hiding a sigh behind it. "The previous Science Department of Shinra was headed by Professor Hojo, wasn't it? It's... in our history textbooks."

History. Joey remembered her repulsion for this man and didn't feel it to the same degree. "You worked for Shinra back then too, didn't you, sir? I think I recognise you. From the books, that is."

Heide was slightly shocked by the girl's knowledge. He hadn't expected her to know of Hojo or even himself. He pondered for a moment, considering a lie, but the text books would give him away. Everyone knew of Heidegger Pferdenlachen: Director of the Public Safety Maintenance Department and the top general of the Military.

Heide sat back in the chair and smoothed his hands over his hair as he had a million times before. He scratched his chin as he spoke. "I guess my past ain't somethin' I can escape. Aye, I was a board member. Me, Jack ShinRa, his boy, Palmer, Scarlet, Tuesti, and even Hojo. We were the power behind the company. Gyaha, well most of us were, I don't know about Palmer so much. -grin- Anyway, We did good things and we did some not. I ain't seen Palmer nor Hojo so I'm assumin' they hadn't been as lucky. Gods, we all knew Palmer was gonna eat himself to death. Hojo, I figured he'd have some potion or some shi...uh... Stuff to keep himself alive. Science freak... Either way. Yup, Hojo was head of the Science Department. Man was too smart for his own good. I'd call him a role model but . . . No, he's not really. Maybe his work is the role model. His uh... what's the word? Determination? Yeah, that's it."

Heide stopped and his smile faded for a moment. He blinked, smoothed his hair back, and a rumble that echoed the halls bellowed from his mouth.

"Gyahahahahahahahaha! Can't let the past get ya down Missy! All that is over 'n' done with nothing we can do about it."

Heide reached in his jacked pocket to find the flask Jack had given him for his birthday. He opened the lid and smelled the sweet smell of bourbon. He looked at the girl and back to the flask.

"It's been a long time Jack. Now's not the time to try to relive the glory days."

Heide sniffed the flask one last time before capping it and returning it to his pocket. He smiled at the girl and spoke again.

"You got any questions for someone who's in a text book? I feel like a celebrity or something!"

"Professor Hojo is dead," Joey murmured, and the smile of dark amusement on her lips was not one that could ever appear on a child her physical age. "His body was buried at the base of the Sister Ray, rather hastily, before the whole construction collapsed under Meteor."

Would Heidegger dare to question her knowledge? She looked at him again, expression perhaps betraying some of the exasperation that had forever graced her former features, before sitting down across from him and putting the rose gently on the seat next to her.

"You are a celebrity, sir," she said softly. Joey would not openly tell him who she really was, but at the same time, she had nothing to hide. Let him judge the oddness of her demeanor himself and make up his own mind. "You were in the papers a lot, during the Wutai War. And in old videos of President Rufus' inauguration." Her smile widened, rather mysterious, almost mischievous - "But a lot of the history books are rather biased when it comes to Shinra's old directors. Jack Shinra, Evan Palmer, Scarlet West, Reeve Tuesti... Simon Hojo. And yourself, of course - Mr. Pferdenlachen, right? - I'm afraid the texts document a long list of atrocities under each director's name, and very few positive attributes.

But then again, history is written by the victors." She peered at him over her glasses, channeling all the innocence she could muster - "and Shinra company certainly had a most spectacular fall, didn't it?"

So odd, sharing reminisces with the man with a ruthless reputation - the man who once stormed into Hojo's department and broke the science director's nose, and then some. Joey leaned back in her seat, caught again between two lives, and laughed a laugh too characteristic of her previous self before her face darkened again-

"I do have one question for you, sir." A pause. "Official documents say you died, along with Scarlet West, on a mechanical monster she called the Proud Clod. How did you survive? And is Miss West still alive?"
