becoming by darkeyedwolf (oneshot, LxRaito) Written earlier in DN continuity, (20s or so) becoming still captures the heart of the LxRaito relationship. You know that if the two ever got together, both of them would have the same motivations and desires regardless of who they were sleeping with. darkeyedwolf delivers it here, and it gets to you, and just savor the animosity so much.
just that and paper cranes by darkeyedwolf (oneshot, LxRaito) Raito has to think about his forced captivity with L. Why do I like this fic? It flows. Raito is mad and bitchy about what he has to endure, giving up his privacy and ease of movement, but he's still Raito so he's not going to complain and let L know about it. This fic gives you this sense of what it was like behind the scenes at the hotel, the quiet time, when the characters weren't rushing to investigate Kira.
This is how it starts: L yawns, delicate veins tugging at the muscles in his wrists, then pecks a few more times on his laptop and closes it up without a word.
"Ready for bed, Raito-kun?" he asks.
And Raito, disheveled and disgruntled and hunched in an uncomfortable crouch in an equally uncomfortable armchair, shifting intermediately in a vain attempt to find a softer spot, heavy-lidded eyes glaring at that stupid stupid chain connecting him to the only person in Japan not asleep at four in the morning, sees the light of God.
Pie! Pie! Pie! by darkeyedwolf (oneshot, crack) Written for the "alternate professions" challenge on deathnote100, this fic is to die for *has heart attack* OMG, I was laughing so hard after I was through and I think eveyone on the dn100 comm agrees with me that this fic is comic genius. Little summary: L watches the recordings of Raito at home and sees something most unexpected. *still laughing*
Two DN ficlets: encounters & nuances by keraha (ficlets, completed, LxRaito) Hmm, I can't do these two fics any justice so I think I'll just leave it to keraha's phenomenal writing to do the work. These are set when Raito and L meet in the University. From encounters:
Raito knew that Ryuuga knew who he was. He knew that Ryuuga lived to kill him, and that in turn, he lived to kill Ryuuga. They were caught up in each other, their lives inexplicably intertwined. He knew that without a doubt, he should write Ryuuga's name in the Death Note and be rid of the one man who knew who he was.
Unraveling by keraha (oneshot, gen, L, Raito) Also set early in Death Note, Raito thinks on Ryuuzaki and his lack of social skills. Another excellent fic, the author truly gets what it's like between L and Raito, the two are in constant opposition and everthing between them is one big mindfuck. *le sigh*
Watching Raito by keraha (oneshot, gen, Ryuuku, Raito) Ryuku watches Raito, thinking about the diferences between humans and Shinigami, and why he stays with this one human. Another great fic, the author explores Ryuuku's thought and you see everything so well through his eyes. She/he captures the slight mischief and madness in Ryuuku's tone that is hard to capture and paints a wonderful picture.
Raito truly was a genius, but not in the way that his mother would approve of. He killed mercilessly between homework assignments and studying. Read the textbook, chapter 7.1-9, write down a few names, finish the math problems that he hadn't finished in school, begin a paper, write names, continue studying.
It was deliciously twisted, and Ryuuku loved it.
Believe by tdei (oneshot, gen, AU, Raito) Raito accomplishes his goal and uses the Death Note to punish criminals, and now looks back on what he has accomplished. Creepy and angstful, it's a serious and marvelously fleshed out look at what Raito would do if he actually suceeded in getting his own way. Waah! Just so good.
There would be no second chance for something like this. It was one chance in a lifetime. He would be a fool to throw away the one thing he always wanted: a chance to change the world, to be a god, to make a real difference. And Raito was anything but a fool.
He had in his hands, the means. He had in his heart, the will.
Anniversary by jaebi_lit (oneshot, futurefic) A look two years into the future. L is still working on the Kira case, and he's still not convinced that Raito's innocent.
L never spoke unncessarily; he preferred to test people, to see where their tongues would lead them. This was true of his dealings with the other members of the force, at least. With Raito-kun, he waited because as fast as he was at making calculations and deductions, Raito-kun was just as quick, and there was a forty percent chance that he would fall into a verbal trap if he spoke too quickly.
Reasoning by tarigwaemir (oneshot, gen, Raito, L) Hmm..how to explain this fic without giving it all away? I really like Tari's L, the way he thinks and his drive to catch Kira. Just fits canon!L to a T.
