CHARACTER INFO

Character name: Denzel

Fandom: Final Fantasy VII Compilation

Point in canon taken from: Immediately post- Advent Children.

Appearance: Being only twelve, Denzel's still a bit on the short and scrawny side. Blue-eyed with wavy brown hair and a full face he obviously hasn't hit puberty yet. Usually he wears something cheap, simple and purchasable from the closest local clothing supplier. Generally that tends to run along the lines of mute colored short sleeve hoodies with a short sleeved shirt beneath and khaki pants of some gray variety. Sneakers and socks are his footwear of choice.

Personality: An orphan, Denzel lived a hard life after Meteor and his experiences with death and Geostigma have shaped his perspective of the world into something other than what he'd have had if his parents had lived. Living with Tifa and Cloud has only encouraged his serious nature, though his new 'family' helps him remember it's okay to laugh from time to time as well.

He likes to believe he's independent, even though he knows how well being on his own worked for him last time. It frustrates him that so many people always help him and he can't do a thing back for them besides say thanks and smile; if he spots a better way, to help those he cares for, even if it might be too much for him he'd at least like to give it a try. As much as he wants to help and pull his own weight to repay past kindnesses, he also wants to do his best to make sure those important in his life stick around. He's had a train of disappearing authority figures since Meteor and he blames himself at least a bit for each one, for not being stronger or more aware.

Denzel does know how to laugh though and he makes stupid mistakes just like every other kid, overreacts and gets himself into trouble. He does his best to emulate his hero, Cloud, but that doesn't always work out so well. His dream is to one day be as strong as Cloud.

History: Born in Midgar, Denzel lived with his father and mother on Sector 7 Plate. Things were well enough, his mother a stay-at-home mom and his father working his way up at the Shinra Company to become head of his division. When Denzel was seven the terrorist group Avalanche resumed its activities. At the time it didn't matter much to him, but a week after one of the mako reactors was bombed his father came home from work early and tried to usher Denzel and his mother out of the sector.

Denzel left with one of his father's co-workers, but his mother ran off to find her friends and his father followed. He was supposed to wait for them at their new house in Sector 3, but then...the Sector 7 Plate dropped on top of the slums below. Shinra blamed it on Avalanche. Both of Denzel's parents had still been on the plate at the time it dropped. He looked for them, hoping they'd gotten out, but all that happened was he got lost. Ruvie Tuesti ended up taking him in and he lived with her for a time. She was nice and he grew fond of her. But the world quickly turned crazy. WEAPONs started wondering the Planet and one even attacked Midgar, though thankfully Ruvie and he were unharmed.

A giant meteor appeared in the sky, drawing gradually closer. It was going to be the end of the world, that's what people said. On the day Meteor descended though the Lifestream came out of the Planet and destroyed it. Ruvie died during the incident along with a large part of Midgar's population; the city was ruined. From then it was up to Denzel to bury Ruvie and find out where to go from there. He descended from the unstable plate to the slums with everyone else. By this point a strange disease that made people ooze black pus had started taking hold in the populace. People dropped dead left and right. For the longest time nobody even bothered burying them.

Denzel ended up joining with a group of other orphans. They stuck together and protected themselves, whether it was just from hunger or adults who thought they could be picked on. They helped the adults bury the dead when everyone got around to it and eventually ended up scavenging the ruins of Midgar for the construction going on the edge of the city where new homes were being raised. The adults paid them, a lot of times in food, everything was good for awhile. But then the adults got organized and didn't need the kids anymore. They could just get someone from a hardware provider to give them screws or a lumberyard to give them wood. The group of orphans gradually broke up, filtering to the orphanages in the city being built off of Midgar called Edge.

Finally it was only Denzel stubbornly holding out. He wandered the desolate carcass of Midgar until he happened upon a church in the Sector 5 Slums. There was a motorcycle outside; someone else was there. He didn't find out who immediately though as he suffered his worst nightmare: an attack from the new disease, Geostigma. He passed out. Later he woke up in Seventh Heaven and met Cloud (his savior), Marlene and Tifa. He ended up staying with them as his sickness got worse and worse. At least Cloud was there; Cloud was someone he could look up to, a hero.

Then Cloud stopped returning to Seventh Heaven after his delivery jobs. Things just got worse until the day Denzel and the other sick children of Edge got into a truck driven by two silver haired men. The two men said they could cure the Geostigma, but when they bought the kids to the Forgotten City they just brainwashed them with the Jenova cells in their bodies. Returning to Edge the kids kept the populace back as the silver haired men, Loz, Yazoo and Kadaj, searched for Jenova. Kadaj summoned Bahamut SIN and Avalanche, one again, saved the day. The kids were freed and rain poured down and cured everyone of Geostigma.

Example tag: There had been one perk to being sick: no school. Despite not having gone for the past two years, or perhaps because of it, Denzel hated going. Math didn't have any application in the real world. Well okay maybe basic stuff like addition and subtraction, but nobody was ever going to ask him to find x or else. He'd worked as hard as any adult after Meteor; he knew what reality was like. And reality didn't include vocabulary sheets and the FOIL method.

Still, he'd rather solve for x than have to go each day with the pain of Geostigma again. Even if it was useless math. He tapped his pencil against the counter in Seventh Heaven. The problems in his text book were...hard. How were they supposed to know all this stuff? He barely remembered fourth grade. At least he wasn't the only one who'd been held back by things. Pretty much everyone in his class except for a few were his own age.

"Hey Tifa... You need groceries, right? How about I go get some! You have a list, yea?" He asked suddenly, sliding off the stool. His brain just couldn't take anymore!

Example journal: This is different... I wonder if there's a gift shop. I think I saw one. But I didn't see Marlene in there, I wonder where she went. We were going to bring out the cake to celebrate everyone's victory...

Maybe I'm dreaming... But I don't feel like I'm dreaming.

Cloud and Tifa have to be around here somewhere. And everyone else. They wouldn't leave me alone. I am definitely not alone! I hope. I'll just have to find them. No matter where they are. Right.
