Adoration by sakurazuka_jae (gen, oneshot, post-series) A look into the home life of Edward Elric post series. What I love about Jaelle's writing here and in all of her/his Fullmetal Alchemist fanfics is that she/he understands the character. Their motivations and reasons for acting the way they do, so even in some of her/his more cracktastic humor pieces, you can still hear the voice of the character shining through in the odd situations Jaelle puts them through. In Adoration you can hear Edward's state of mind after the series and you feel his fears. Jae packs a mean punch in a relatively short fic.
Internal Affairs by sakurazuka_jae (oneshot) One of Jaelle's lighter pieces, Edward marches into Mustang's office and eavesdropping ensues. Showcasing that Jaelle is also great at punchlines and one-liners. Internal Affairs is well written and gives me the giggles everytime I read it. I love the use of the Roy's officers.
The Sin From Which All Others Arise by sakurazuka_jae (oneshot, AU) Author's summary: Pride goes before a fall. A marvelous AU idea from when the author had only seen up to episode 26, so for anyone who has only seen up to this point, it's a definite possibility. I really enjoy it when author's push the envelope of existing canon and try to see the possible outcomes. Like in FMA and now in Death Note, where the fans are learning what is happening together, there is room for speculation, which can lead to truly wondrous places.
And now that I have sufficiently whet your appetite, go forth and read the rest of Jaelle's FMA fanfics.
The Perils of Coffee by Sol 1056 (oneshot, fluffy) Edward asks what the significance is of being asked out to coffee. He learns more than he wants to now. Fluffy, good crack!fic that has you smile at the naivete of Edward and how much he and Alphonse are missing out from a normal childhood. It's a good thing he has the officers in Central to give him a hand.
"Date," Edward repeated, a little numbly. "What...what do you do on a date?"
"Do?" Hughes blinked, then laughed, a lazy sound. "Talk, then you go for a walk, maybe buy her flowers..."
Flowers, Edward thought. Wonder if transmuting them is cheating.
Taking Responsibility by mikkeneko (shounen-ai, oneshot, RoyEd) When Al comes to defend his brother's honor, ROy must own up. Bwahahaha, indignant!Al fic. Don't want to give away too many of the punchlines, so I'll just leave you to this teaser.
"It's the Colonel," he said. "He and Elric-san are having a -- er -- something of a dispute."
Havoc groaned, and struck a match. "Again?" he said, as he lit the end of his cigarette. "Geez, it's like watching kids courting on a playground. You could bring down a city with the sexual tension between
the Colonel and Fullmetal. Why can't they just fuck already and get it over with?"
Fury coughed. "Apparently, that's the problem," he said.
Just downhill from here...
One Step Closer by lazulisong (oneshot, gen, barely there RoyEd) An introspective piece told from both Ed and Roy's points of views.
Sometimes he dreams of the night that everything went wrong, that night of blood and pain and nothing but sudden horrible realizations, and sometimes he wakes up crying and other times he wakes up and tries not to scream because Al will hear and panic.
Sometimes, though, Al wakes him up, one great metal hand closing gently over his shoulder -- wake up, niisan, wake up, it's just a dream, you're all right, we're all right.
untitled by nusuth (oneshot, shounen-ai) A humorous piece with lovely descriptions on the characters' (Roy, Ed, and Al's) takes on winter. I love how Roy here is the manipulative bastard we know and love and poor Edward just happens to fall into line with his plans. Also, great punchline.
Having Fullmetal with him was just the icing on the cake. It served the double purpose of increasing the Colonel's popularity even further (seeing as, by now, it was almost common knowledge that the Fullmetal Alchemist - dog of the army and yet still friend of the people - was the short kid with the red coat rather than the huge suit of armor) and providing Roy with free entertainment for the day.
One Trick Pony by vikki (oneshot) IN WHICH Ed and Roy do tricks. Another thing I like about the FMA fandom is the amount of snark floating around in fanfics. By having intelligent characters (as well as manipulative bastards) the opportunity to write clever one liners is that much greater and in character. Go Vikki!
