A lot has happened since my last post. I ended up turning down the fellowship to study in South Korea. I ended up getting a job at this Vietnamese restaurant courtesy of two good friends. I really love working less and making more money. My last job sucked balls, crappy job seriously crappy ass pay, I'm definitely much happier with the job I have now.
Much of my time which hasn't been devoted to working or spending time with friends, has been spent watching Power Rangers and Super Sentai series. Before I get to that my best friend and I attended the Space City convention a few weeks ago. OMG absolutely had a blast, it was a convention specifically aimed at comic-book lovers, science-fiction, and fantasy, gamer lovers. Totally different experience from the usual anime conventions I attend. People were actually polite and nice and the dealers were nice and not overbearing. They were're pressuring you to buy their items. I ran into some friends from last year's Ikkicon, the guys from Loyal King were there, and saw two other friends there too, well one of them just worked in the mall, she wasn't actually attending the convention. Seriously this convention centered around Power Rangers and Star Trek, well at least it seemed like that to us. They had a lot of prominent people there, Nichelle Nichols of Star Trek, some famous sci-fic writers and artists and some performers. For me the highlight of the convention was Jason David Frank AKA Tommy Oliver from PR.
OMG we attended his panel and it was really good. He talked about his life on PR, his career in the MMA, and life in the spotlight. I actually summoned up the nerve to ask him a question. I asked him about Tommy's onscreen relationship with Katherine. He responded with he didn't understand them getting together either and he mentioned that infamous letter that Kim sent to Tommy, and he said that they should have switched it up and paired Tommy with the blue ranger or something. The entire audience erupted in laughter and he said he was kidding, the funny thing was that there just happened to be a blue ranger sitting right in front of me. After the panel we hit up the dealer's room. Where I scored some nice Renaissance Faire swag for cheap. But the highlight for me was finally getting to meet JDF.
One of the things in order to take a picture with him. You had to purchase an item from him. I ended up buying one of his Jesus Doesn't tap shirts. It was totally worth it. I totally thought that he would be much more intimidating in real life but he wasn't at all.
Definitely the highlight of the convention, besides meeting up with friends and hanging out with Mama Fox.
Recently, as I stated I have been spending time watching PR and Super Sentai series. Since my last post, I watched all of PR Time Force courtesy of Nicktoons Morphin maranthon. I enjoyed PR Timeforce. It was a good season, Ransik and the whole Jen being torn between her love for Alex and Wes, I absoultely loved Katie and Trip and Eric. I had no idea that Michael Copon played a power ranger! Michael Copon is so freaking hot, I've seen him in other series so it was a complete surprise whenever I started watching Timeforce and he popped up in the series. Definitely a surprise, overall it was good season, I'm happy that I finally know about the infamous Jen and Wes couple. One of my favorite episodes was called "Jen's Revenge", she went off and tried battling Ransik on her own and girl got her ass handed to her, Jen is a good fighter no doubt but damn he whipped her butt real good. One of the other episodes that I enjoyed was the one where Wes' father discovered that he was a power ranger and Wes is injured in a battle and like Leo his visor is busted so you can actually see his face inside the visor that was awesome.
They actually said the word "DIE" on one episode, which surprised the heck out of me. That one character would mentioned that there was a possiblity that this character could die. Their team-up with Light Speed Rescue rangers was a bit weird but it was a nice team-up, good seeing them again and the best part was seeing Joel and Mrs. Fairweather together, they had gotten married and were on their honeymoon awwwwww! I enjoyed seeing Dan Southworth as the quatum ranger too, I first saw him in that movie with JYB Broken Path. He was a good anti-hero in the series. Timeforce had a dark tone to it too, and I enjoyed how Jen was the leader throughout most of the series. I also thought had the yellow ranger been female in their sentai counterpart, then Jen totally would have been the yellow ranger, she had that drive and spunk that the female yellow rangers often posses. I liked Katie too, she looked like she could have been Tanya's little sister or distant cousin. The sad thing is that she was the last black female to be casted as a power ranger :(
Nonetheless it was a good season I throughly enjoyed it!
Lost Galaxy cast, Damon, Kai, Maya, Karone and sexy Leo
Lost Galaxy was great, Leo, Damon, Mike and Kai were all HOT! Especially Leo hot damn he was hot! He was like Jason 2.0 *lol* Damon was sexy chocolate brother, and Mike was good looking too, and Kai was so freaking cute. Anyways loved the PRLG/PRS teamup sans Ashely. One of my favorite episodes was the "Rescue Mission", hands down definitely one of the best PR episodes. The team went out to attend to an alien ship that sent out a distress signal. Turns out the entire crew was dead and had been killed by an entity living on the ship, such a great episode. It's up there with "Always a Chance" from PRS, the episode where Adam came back to help Carlos gain some self-esteem. The downside to me was their suits, LG suits were so ugly and their megazord was not very pleasing to the eyes either. But other than that great season throughly enjoyed it.
The epic PRIS/PRLG team-up
I enjoyed PRLSR Joel was defintely my favorite character. Keith Robinson who played Joel was another surprise, because I remembered seeing him some other series, it was another surprise to see that he too played a power ranger. I think that is a common thing that a lot of people are surprised at the actors/actresses who have been power rangers. I like their megazord, particualrly their 1st one, the ladder arms on the zord was cool, and I liked how one of their zords was trained based. I did think it was a bit weird that the public knew the rangers idenities, didnt' care too much for that aspects. The Team-up with PGLG was good but not as epic as the previous team-up. One of the things that surprised me was that on one episode Dana was on a bus and it was jacked and the dude pulled out a gun and threathen to use it. That was certainly a first for PR to have someone actually try and use a real gun.
Overall it was a decent season.
Chad, Dana, Kelsey from Light Speed Rescue with Kai from Lost Galaxy
Wow since my last post finished PRLG, PRLSR and PRT. Damn that's three seaons in less than 2 months *lol
I haven't watched much of PR S.P.D. recently. I like it but I don't particularly care for the cast. I loved Jack and Z and commander Kruger and Sky to a certain extent but Syd and Bridge are very annoying especially Bridge and I almost dislike Syd as much as Ashley from PR turob/inspace. I think that's why I haven't watched much of SPD lately.
RPM! GET IN GEAR
The twins Gem and Gemm
Probably one of the more surprising PR seasons that I watched was PR RPM. Damn that season blew my mind, in terms of storyline, the acting and the plot and their powers. I enjoyed all the rangers, all 7 of them. It was such a cheeky season. I adored Flynn and his Scottish self to pieces, I loved Summer, and Scott and even Ziggy, Dillion was a good anti-hero ranger. Dillion received a lot of focus and he wasn't even the red ranger, which was definitely a switch. Gem and Gemma the gold and sliver rangers were twins and they were hella funny, always finishing each other's sentences. Tenaya 7 was a good foe for the RPM team, and Dr. K was very fun character too. I really enjoyed RPM because it actually deviated completely from it's Sentai counterpart Engine On-onger, that and Dr. K actually explained many questions that people had as to why the PR do things like why explosions occur every time they morph and why they call out their weapons and powers.
The tone was very dark and it had some moments that made me blush, particuarly the scene where Flynn was wearing a kilt and one of the grinders lifted up his kilt. There was the romance between Summer and Dillion. They had a cluster-fuck of mecha zords, 12 of them to be exact. The filming was brillant and grainy and definitely got a sense of darkness from it. RPM was quite dark for a PR season, in fact I liken it to one of Disney's angsty teen dramas, people can argue this with me day and night but RPM was NOT aimed at children IMO. I enjoyed the darker tone and the cast seriously was great, too bad it was one of the shorter season, it was only 32 episodes :(
I also liked that RPM had two female rangers Summer and Gemma favs!
Definitely enjoyed RPM it's in my top 5 favorite seasons
On to Super Sentai...
I started watching Jetman one of the older sentai series. It debuted back in 1991.
One of the things I love about Jetman is that there are two females, one being pink and the other being blue. I really like that they switched making the guy yellow and the other female blue, this wouldn't occur in the sentai series again till Ninja storm. Anywho Jetman has been one wild ride. It has the perfect mixture of action, drama, comedy, and romance. I love a good romance and boy does Jetman have it, it's like a romantic dramatic action series. Jetman is akin to RPM in terms of not knowing what too expect. One of the rangers drinks, and gambles and flirts with women, one of the enemies smokes and there is a lot of violent confrontations between the rangers and their enemies.
I really like how their powers are based on differen bird species including their megazord. I'm throughly enjoying Jetman I'm only halfway through the series and it has been one wild ride. Some of the other Sentai series I've seen are quite tamed compared to Jetman. To be honest despite the grainess and that's simply due to the time in which it was filmed, the action scenes and the fights seem and looked more realistic compared to the modern ones. I guess that has more to do with everything being done with heavy computer animation, than however it was done back then. Some far everything that I've wanted to see in a sentai series has occured in Jetman. I thanked my friend for recommending it to me because I wanted to watch one of the older sentai series just didn't know which one and they suggested this one.
This is the biggest shocker...I actually not only watched the entire season on Samurai Shinkenger I actually throughly enjoyed it. In fact I loved Shinkenger so much that I've watched some episodes over and over again. I wasn't expecting to like the series but I loved it! It was so awesome finally getting to see female red ranger. One of my favorite parts of Shinkengers was Kotoha/Chaiki they were so adorable.
Kotoha/Chaik
I adored them so freaking much. I knew that Mike/Emily in PRS had a little thing going on but I totally wasn't expecting to see that in Shinkenger. I read a good fan-fic about Kotoha/Chiaki, love them to pieces. After finishing the series I admire and respect Takeru so much more than I did at first, he came off an jerk in the beginning but he grew on me and so did Genta. I found him to be so annoying but he grew on me too. I enjoyed the entire Shinkenger cast. The storyline was good, I have a thing about ancient Japanese history love the idea of them being modern-day samurai. I enjoyed the storyline of Dayuu and Juzo, and his on-going battle aganist Takeru was awesome to watch. I really enjoyed Dayuu's character too, she was so conflicted just like Juzo that it made her more complex and enjoyable to watch.
One of my favorite episodes featured Kotoha, and her discovering that her self-confidence, she overcame the Gedesou's tactics of insults to defeat the monster, she said she was able to do because she was often called stupid all her life so whenever the monster insulted her it didn't affect her because she came to accept that if people were saying it it must be true so just have to accept it. Then Chiaki tells her that she must be if she insist that she is and Kotoha gets upset and he comes and apologize to her. They go off and battle and team-up aganist the monster and defeat it and Chaiki praises her and hugs her while they are morphed so cute. After the battle she passes out and Chaiki runs to her aid he literally shoved Ryunnosuke to the ground trying to get to her. Afterwards he carries Kotoha on his back...too freaking kawaii!!!
I enjoyed all the episodes featuring Chiaki and Kotoha
I downloaded the torrents for Gokaiger and Go-onger. I downloaded the first 18 episodes of Go-onger I so tempeted to start watching it but I'm holding myself back, because I want to finish Jetman first. I plan on downloading Gokaiger but I want to finish watching more of the Super Sentai versus movies. The last one I watched was PRLG Vs PRIS, it was okay wasn't great IMO but I still want to continue watching them. Mainly because I want to know about many of the teams of the sentai teams before I start watching the pirates.
Besides work and indulging into PR and the Super Sentai series not much has been going on with me these days. Actually it has but save that for another post.
Thanks Shinobu_kokoro for listening^^
