They reached the edge of the city when the morning dawned, pale, grey and cold. Exhausted, he fell to his knees.
'Is it over?' he asked, barely able to breathe.
'Yes.' she said. She stopped a few steps ahead, looking wistfully at the featureless open lands stretching in front of them as far as the eye could see.
'I wish…' he whispered. 'I wish I had a little more time.'
