Prologue: Mysterious Deaths and Suspicions
It wasn’t really in his character to read newspapers but here he is, the great Joshua Yamada, sitting by the window in their Head Quarters reading the latest issue of their school newspaper - the Horizon.
“Another death…” he muttered to himself and his eyes unconsciously wandering on the tree outside the window. Like the usual, Christian James Okamoto, a fellow top student, was there taking a nap on one of the tree branches. Joshua wondered of what could be on the older boy’s mind. He was quite convinced that of all the people in school (yes, he’s popular thus knows almost everyone) CJ Okamoto is the most difficult person to understand. The English gentleman is just too moody ever since his come back and people can’t catch up with the attitude he is showing them well all except for…
“Are you sick?” speaking of the devil. He heard a familiar voice - a voice hinted with mocking which no doubt belongs to the School Publication’s Circulation Manager - Ryan Nakajima, the only person who could somehow communicate with CJ.
“Am not.” Joshua grunted folding the said newspaper in the process. The fact that another mysterious death was reported kept on bothering him. These deaths happen yearly and usually around this time. Ever since he started his schooling at Hinata Academy, he never failed to hear or read news about these. He stood up and met Ryan’s eyes which seem to tease him more.
“What?!” he barked and sure annoyance can be hinted in his voice. Ryan had always been like this.
Ryan gave a hearty laugh “Nothing. I thought the only books you read are our textbooks and your oh-so-precious mangas.” A glare and it was pretty much ignored. Poor him. “Oh come on Josh, it’s just that I’m not used with you reading newspapers especially something that came from the SP. You always say you dislike what our team writes.” He continued avoiding Joshua’s attempt on landing a playful punch on his arm.
“Saa, we’ll be late for the assembly.” The taller guy gave him a nudge and Joshua rolled his eyes in irritation.
“CJ let’s go!” Ryan shouted in attempt to wake the sleeping English boy. From where they are standing, Joshua could see how CJ slowly opened his sharp-looking eyes. The gentleness that used to be there is already gone. They have been classmates since he could remember. CJ doesn’t say anything at all when they we’re in their primary level. He’d do sign language that only Ryan could understand. As far as Joshua could remember, CJ could speak. He did it once when Ryan almost got hit by a speeding car. It was a mystery why he chose not to speak to any of them except Ryan. He snapped out of his trance as he saw Ryan frantically waving his arms to catch his best friend’s attention. Joshua chortled at the childishness. Ryan didn’t change over the years.
The English gentleman jumped off the tree and entered through the open window. It was odd. Seeing CJ’s sharp eyes somehow sent shivers down Joshua’s spine. It was full of hatred. He remembered CJ having the same look a few weeks ago on Rico Matsumoto - the ones reported dead on the school paper he read just now. He and CJ had been into lots of fights for the past few weeks before he went missing and the fact that Rico is now dead bothered him the most. Joshua shook his head. “It can’t be CJ” he told himself. “CJ is a good person. I know him that much.” He shook his head to remove the unwanted thoughts he had.
“Spacing out eh? Bet you’re nervous. Let’s go before it’s too late” Ryan placed his arms over Joshua’s shoulder glancing at CJ at the same time smiling widely like there’s no tomorrow as they headed to the main auditorium for the Freshmen Assembly.
If it wasn’t for Joshua’s curiosity, none of these should have happened. They wouldn’t be playing such dangerous game neither would his friends’ lives would be at stake and most of all, Angeli, the person he loves the most, wouldn’t be holding this dagger that would bring an end to his life together with the curse that came with all of these.
