quote of the week... "civic duty does not pay the rent"

Jun 15, 2005 12:53

So ya, jury duty sucks ass. First off the only pay you $10/day plus $.05/mile you have to drive. Oh and full-time people, they're work has to reimburse them for time the week they get called for jury duty...but us part-time people who obviously have less money, oh we just get screwed. And it's not like I can even really work nights during this. Closing shifts at BAM start at 4, until today I've been at the Justice Center until 5. If I closed I'd be there until midnight. That'd put me at what, getting to bed at about 2 and getting up at 7 if I need to be at the Justice Center the next day...I don't think so. And my car can barely make it to the Justice Center. Today we finished a case, but unless you're there until 5 you have to call after 5 each day so see if they need you the next day. That's really not enough notice for anything. And I haven't even wanted to eat while I was out serving because they're not paying me enough to.

The first day was spent almost entirely in selection. Then I got stuck on a jury for a robbery, spent all of yesterday there, and spent this morning there. Our particular robbery case was about a group robbery and we had to determine if the one defendant on trial now was actually involved or not. Most of us had enough reasonable doubt that we didn't want to convict the guy and eventually got everyone to agree with us. I was really getting frustrated at some of the other jurors by the end of yesterday though. I'm really glad we were able to though, I would feel horrible if they guy had been convicted when I did not think that there was any way that there was enough evidence to prove him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

And on the background check drama update:

Yesterday I got a letter from the background check people saying that they'd gotten the documents they asked me for. So they're doing a whole new background check. The problem with this is that every step of this process seems to take about a week. If everything was squared away and I'm not stuck with jury duty tomorrow I could be starting working at Target tomorrow morning. The lady who ran orientation was supposed to call all of us to let us know what time to come in for the ten hour shifts Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I of course have not gotten a call due to background check drama. So if they don't let me work until all of this is completely cleared up then I'm going to miss out on 10-30 hours(depending on if/when I'd be tied up with jury duty) I could have gotten this week. And of course I also asked the whole week off from BAM so that I could go serve jury duty and work at Target.

A girl really needs to be able to work so that she can pay her rent. Dad says that he can help me out if I need it because he gets paid Friday. It's just so frustrating. Every time I think I might be able to possibly save a tiny little bit of money something goes wrong. I've said it before and now I'll say it again, I really need to get on getting financial aid for the fall so I can do things like go to school and live then, not to mention be able to do a few extra things.

Why does drama seem to run in packs?

At least I got a little certificate saying that I am/was on the Dean's List for the spring 2005 semester. I guess that's something.
