I just got back from my first real forray into China Town. It's only about 10 or 11 blocks from where I'm living but the streets in lower manhattan are a frickin maze and I was finally able to find it today. It was like stepping into another country. Out of the 5,000 people or so I passed on the street, probably less then 15 weren't asian. Everyone was talking Chinese around me and all the signs and the shops and stuff were in Chinese and actually for Chinese people. I'm so used to "ethnic" stuff being huge tourist traps, what a pleasent surprise. New York, you've impressed me again.
The Siren Music Festival was really fun. Art Brut was the highlight by far. I found a little group of slam dancers and jumped in with them and danced till I ached. Stars and the Stills were also quite enjoyable. The last band that I saw, the Scissor Sisters, were absolutely hilarious. They were this disco band and the lead singer stripped on stage down to his thong. And it was completely free, too!
In other news, the broker that screwed me is offering to give me back close to half the money I deposited. Half is better then nothing, but I'm going to wait and see if I have a case to get more back or not.
