If I were mayor

If I were mayor…

If I were running for mayor these would be my key platform planks:

1.) Immediately pause all funding to entertainment driven contracts like this new arena. An Ad Hoc committee would be formed to determine how funding could be re-allocated to programs below.

2.) Re-allocate money to immediately begin construction of at least 5 more homeless shelters.

3.) Creation of a program to get homeless people into jobs citywide.

4.) Lobby Manitoba Legislature to pass a law making pan handling, squeegying, and roadside begging illegal.

5.) Free and meaningful training for the homeless to assist with finding jobs or pursuing higher education

6.) Lobby for changes to the welfare system. Cash will NOT be given out. People on welfare will be given vouchers in lieu of cash. These vouchers can be exchanged at stores for clothes, medicine, food, etc. They cannot be redeemed for cash. They cannot be used to purchase alcohol or cigarettes.

7.) Immediately hire 50-100 new police officers and have them assigned, permanently, to high crime areas.
8.) Lobby for jail time for slum landlords.

9.) Enact laws entitling the city to seize the property of know crackhouses. Upon seizure the city will immediately bulldoze the house. Derelict homes on that are not purchased after one year on the market will also be bulldozed and the property seized by the city.

10.) Lobby the PM to invoke the War Measures Act to immediately break and end all gang activity in the city of Winnipeg.

11.) Ammend the youth criminal justice act to allow adult penalties and jail time for the worst offenders.

12.) Make graffiti an indictable offense punishable by jail

13.) Bring back truant officers to ensure kids are in school learning, and not on the streets.

14.) Mandatory airport level security measures for clubs or bars. Failure to comply will result in immediate and permanent loss of liquor licenses.

15.) 10:00 PM Curfew for everyone under 18 years of age. If you’re caught you are jailed until the next day, and your caregivers are fined $500. Repeated offences will increase the fine to $1000, then to $5000, then to jail for the caregivers or parents.

This may sound draconian, but for Christ sake we have a group of bastards running around the inner city shooting, terrorizing, and killing with impunity. The very fact that there are some places in this city that you can’t go to at night, is reason enough to enact laws like those above.
