[Fic] Another Day at Horizon Academy - Ch. 2

Usually, I jump at the chance to make fun of Elef or tease him in some way because his character can be just so cute. But this time it's an attempt at a serious character exposition.

Don't worry, though; making fun of Elef will be coming soon with a vengeance.

Summary: Horizon Academy is a prestigious educational facility where many unique characters from around the world gather. Follow Revo as he uncovers the quirks and secrets of his fellow classmates.
Disclaimer: Nope. Still don't own anything.

Revo mostly saw his friend Elef as a serious and thoughtful person with an inkling of a short temper. Having been home-schooled prior to his student career at Horizon Academy, he’s prone to secluding himself when he has the chance, unlike his twin sister, Misia, who’s practically a social butterfly. Most of the school’s population saw him in such a light and leave him alone (save for a few exceptions)-but as he found out not too long ago, Elef can make a startling three-sixty-degree turn in personality, going from war-faced recluse to compassionate saint in one fell swoop.

He witnessed this personality shift first-hand when he was in the library in order to read up on old myths and novels. The second year was sitting at a corner table blocked by a bookshelf when he heard voices echoing through the room (since no one would come to the library during their lunch period, he seemed to notice). Peeking through the small cracks the books made, he saw Elef guiding their English professor, Milos, by the hand. Once they sat down, they started to talk and laugh light-heartedly over lunch.

It was only later that Revo discovered that their old, blind professor turned out to be Elef’s grandfather.

"Elef and Misia had a rough childhood." Jake told him after he explained what he saw, "I don’t know much about the specifics, though. But you can ask Elef’s friend, Orion. I think he knows."

When the second year finally managed to track down the school’s renowned archer, the explanation he got about Elef’s past was a bit more than he had first imagined.

"Ellie used to be a bit of a crybaby back then and Misia was a tomboy, if you can believe it." Orion said. No, he couldn’t believe it actually, "They got kicked out of their house by their father when they were really young, because he got too superstitious about their birth. They had to rough it out in the streets for a long time before their grandparents found them and took them in. Their older brother, Leontius, told me that their mom wanted them to stay there until the divorce was finalized because she didn’t want to risk something happening to them."

Revo himself was raised in a loving environment, though he didn’t get to see his own father much due to his business trips. He couldn’t imagine what he would’ve done at that age if he was kicked out of his own home. In retrospect, an event like that would’ve steeled any child, provided they were strong enough to get through it.

"It’s... really sad." He said as he was relaying the story to Jake. The older boy nodded.

"A lot of students here have those kinds of pasts and dark secrets." Jake said, leaning back against his chair, "It’s almost like a bunch of top-rated novels they’re selling at the stores. Elef’s a perfect example of a 'face heel turn'."

"A what?"

The guitarist nodded, going back to his mathematics homework, "It’s a kind of trope. Look it up online when you have the chance."

Neither of them brought up the topic again, but with what Jake said, Revo had to wonder what other kinds of things the students of Horizon Academy could be hiding.
