Today Is A Different Kind Of Anniversary...

"I'll be glad when this month is over so we can go back to being ashamed."
- Brian Kinney (Queer As Folk)

Each year I do "Happy Pride... How's it going?" posts in honor of Queer As Folk. Practically no one gets the reference but that's not why I'm here. Guess what today is?! Yes, it's both my sister and cousin's birthdays but no... nope, that's not why I'm here. I'm here because this year is the 50yr anniversary of the night that started a revolution...

Ya know, as a whole, our community is rather broken right now. We have become a trend... Shells of our former selves. Yes, I am glad things are changing for the better but I sometimes wonder if all the changes are worth it if our roots get left behind. Today's youth shrug off the fight to be free because they have never lived it or don't wanna admit is exists. There will always be a debate over who threw the 1st brick and that's okay. Debate away. Do you know what isn't up for debate tho'? That night, 50yrs ago, our voices were heard loud and clear. We are just as important. Just as loving. Just as everything any straight person can be and we're not afraid to fight for it.
So today, this bright and sunny day, know that our battles are nit yet won. Trans women of color are still being murdered by the hundreds and openly shunned by the thousands. Never forget this day as an anniversary as important as any because this was the day our LGBTQRSTUVWYXYZ sisters/brothers and all that is in between came together and fought back.
To me, it's worth celebrating. Without it, maybe we wouldn't be where we are today.
So yeah... Happy Pride... How's it going? ❤💛💚💙💜
