DAVI + REN

Dec 23, 2008 21:49

It'd been a decent holiday season, meaning one one had died, no one had gotten belligerently drunk and/or the cops never paid a visit to their house, but Ren was still eager to get back to school. Well, not school, but Countshire at large. There was only so much of her extended family she could take before her ears started to bleed. So she returned ( Read more... )

The days after Christmas slipped by with the all the casualness of . . .well, something rather casual, Davi considered. He was never one for words when he consciously tried to think of them. One too many days spent out toiling away at his papers while merry and quite often drunk colleagues and schoolmates had paid off and he was just about eighty percent done with the review goal he'd set for himself. Bending over his laptop, he was just entering in the last few digits of the article he'd been reading's publication number when his phone gave a vibrating ring. He'd thought of changing the boring Motorola ring tone multiple times but never got around to it. Picking it up out of its holder on his desk, he starred in surprise at the number- and the name.

"Hello? Ren?" He asked as he hit the answer button and brought it up to his ear. "You're back early!"

"Unnghh-" she said, as not speaking much all day and hanging upside down did not make for a favorable combination. Clearing her throat and crossing her eyes in embarrassment, Ren tried again.

"Davi, hey. Yeah, yeah. Got bored, haha," she said huskily, trying to sound as cool as possible to make up for that tender greeting, "How's it hanging, huh?"

"Nothing much. Just finishing some reading, databasing. Paperwork type of things." Davi tried to lean back in the standard dormitory chairs and failed. The wooden backings were made for easy mass production, definitely not comfort. Maybe he should get a pillow for it now that it seems like he'd be staying for a while at least.

"Bored of home? Did you come back alone or with your brothers?"

Man, this guy was all work, work, work, wasn't he? It was admirable she supposed, but also worrying. He was going to blow a gasket if he kept on like this...

"Oh, huh, wow. You never quit, do you?" she laughed a little, drumming her red nails against the body of the phone. "Alone. I don't know what they're doing. I need some non-fam time, you know?"

"I'm not a workaholic if that's what you mean, haha. I just wanted to have more time to do other things when everyone's back." Davi gave a small grin as he rested his head on the back of his chair. That felt a little better.

"I bet it can get tiresome to have both your brothers around all the time. Escaped at your first chance?," he teased. Ren talking about, with or to her brothers was always an amusing sight. He didn't have siblings and well, the orphanage just wasn't the same growing up.

"Nah, not that bad..." She didn't think he was, but then... it wouldn't surprise her, either, to see him coming back from an Overworkers Anonymous meeting. "It's cool, you just know what you want."

"Hey!" Ren laughed, kicking her feet absently, "Not the FIRST chance, but um, maybe a fourth or even a third one. Maaybe. You, by the way, made an impression on Mikey in a big way. I don't know what the fuck came over him all of a sudden."

"Did I?" Bringing up Michael DeAngelo brought the contents of his PM to mind- and the implications of Ren being a magician, from a magician family. . .his father's kind, as those who had hired him had explained. His eye flickered over to his closet and the locked box hidden inside.

"Your brother cares for you a lot. For your family it seems." His thumb worked at a crease in his jeans. "He told me I have to keep you happy or I'll answer to him", Davi teased. He wondered what Ren's ability was.

she's pretty well-versed in the art of accidentally blinding herself

"He said what?" Ren said, eyebrows knitting together. Leaning forward, she bent one arm back to prop herself up. Another reaction like that and she was going to give herself a concussion. "What the fuck!" Mikey was going to make her sound like she wanted to marry Davi and make lots of little Brazilian-German-Italian babies (or wherever the hell he was from).

"What else he tell you?"

"Nothing much. He did say something about your family being compared to the Godfathers." Davi kept his voice light, the amusement coloring his words.

Godfathers?

Godfa-

"He what now?" Sweet bungee-jumping Jesus! It wasn't like almost everyone already knew; he had to go tell the one guy-!

"Would you believe he's a pathological liar?"

"Really?" Davi grinned despite himself. "He is an actor. Could be possible." It was cute the minor wavelength of panic he could almost detect.

"So I shouldn't be expecting men in expensive suits after my life? No horse heads?"

This was not cute! This was panic, full-blown panic, full-blown panic resulting in the cold-blooded murder of one of her brothers (and for once, it wasn't Tito being retarded)!

"No, none of that shit," she mumbled frantically, trying to silently take deep breaths in between replies. "Besides, that's just Hollywood stuff."

He could hear her voice start to mumble and he laughed a little.

"I'm kidding. I'm sure I'll survive hanging around you." He switched the phone to his other ear.

"Though really, does your brother always do stuff like that? He's a bit melodramatic, isn't he?"

"Huh?" Was he laughing at her? Despite being insulted, she smiled a little. Though why the fuck was she smiling when he was laughing at her?

"He's an actor, I mean, there are stereotypes and then there are fucking requirements. He's a melodramatic guy. Really, really melodramatic." Okay, so maybe he was only melodramatic with one 'really'; she needed to do some damage control.

"Must have been fun times growing up with him." Damage control was completely acceptable, at least on the public front. Besides. . .there would be time enough to ponder on the implications of her and her family being magicians. The mafia part was a bit confusing and strange, especially since they weren't even dating yet. Not exclusively anyways. And he wasn't even really sure if she considered the handful of times they'd gone out, with other people more often than not, as "dating". Women could be complicated like that.

"Any plans? Stuff you want to do now that you're back?"

"Ha. Haha. Good one." she loved her brothers, but some times... Those onoly children had all the luck.

"Well, I was sorta thinking we could hang out at some point, but other than that, ha, not really..."
