Title: Don't Lose This Heart of Mine
Pairing: Taemin/Minho
Rating: PG
Wordcount: 2,625
Summary: Taemin loses Minho's heart even though Minho instructed him to take good care of it.

Don’t wanna let this moment slip away
Cause I have something I really need to say
And it’s killing me inside
I think that you don’t understand
How I would give you all I have and all I am
Till the end of time
-Murder My Heart by Michael Bolton feat. Lady Gaga

Taemin was a careless child - almost everyone knew that (but no one will ever replace Jinki as the most careless one in SHINee). He misplaces things, gets lost in a crowd easily and he breaks things often too. At first, everyone in the band (except Jinki) thought that Taemin was doing things in purpose, but then, after getting to know more about the young maknae, they found out that Taemin was just an innocent boy whose mind seems to fly away from him more often that it should.

Minho, on the other hand, found this trait of Taemin quite adorable. That’s why when Taemin drops something, he makes sure that he’ll be the one to pick it up and he’ll keep it with him until Taemin needs it again, or when they’re in a huge crowd, he’ll hold onto Taemin’s wrist to make sure that the younger won’t go missing again. One could actually say that Minho is Taemin’s nanny but of course, Minho wasn’t Taemin’s nanny, in fact, he was something more. He was the maknae’s lover. No more, no less.

Christmas Eve
“Taemin-ah, here’s my gift for you.” Minho smiled brightly at Taemin as he handed him a small velvet box. Taemin looked at the box in his boyfriend’s hand and blinked. He hesitated to take the box from Minho at first. It was an expensive looking box and surely, whatever was in it (he was betting it’s a piece of jewelry - a ring, even) was costly too. If he were to keep the gift, he will surely lose it. It’s not that Taemin doesn’t trust himself, it’s just that losing precious things (all unintended) was one of his specialties.

“Is it precious?” was his first question to the older one as he reached out to take the box but ended up backing out in the last minute. “Yes, Taemin-ah, that’s why I’ll really get mad if you lose this.” Minho replied with a smile on his face as he opened the box, revealing its content.
It was a bracelet made of white gold. God damn it, it was definitely beautiful.

“But hyung-“

“No buts, Taeminnie. Just think of this as my heart. Losing it means losing my heart that’s why you have to take care of it as good as you can. Don’t lose this heart of mine, Taemin-ah.” He told him and carefully, he put the bracelet on Taemin’s wrist before pulling up the younger’s hand to his lips and placing a tender kiss on the back of his hand.
“Promise me you’ll take care of this and that you’ll never lose it.”

“I won’t, Minho-ah, I won’t. I promise.” Taemin finally replied with a small smile evident on his face as he pulled Minho into a hug.
“Merry Christmas, hyung.” Taemin beamed at him.

In turn, Minho smiled and squeezed the smaller one tightly (but not tight enough to actually kill Taemin via cutting his air supply). “Merry Christmas.”

“Oh, and hyung…?”

“Hm? What is it?”

“I…I kind of lost your Christmas gift on my way back here in the dorm.” Taemin told him before smiling sheepishly at the other. Minho chuckled and pressed a chaste kiss on Taemin’s forehead. “It’s okay, Taemin-ah. It’s okay.”

Three Days Later

“Taemin-ah, where’s Minho’s heart?” Jonghyun asked the young maknae who was busy finishing his bowl of cereals. He forced back a snicker after nicknaming the bracelet that Minho gave to Taemin, finding it quite hilarious.

Taemin froze and glanced at his wrist where the bracelet was supposed to be. But it was just right there…

He bit his tongue and continued to eat, trying to look as calm as possible even if he was already on the verge of panicking. “I...I kept it in a safe place, hyung.” He lied as he looked at Minho from the side.

Minho, on the other hand, pretended that he can’t hear the main singer and the main dancer’s conversation about his ‘heart’ and continued on reading the newspaper.

“Oh, I totally thought that you lost it!” Jonghyun exclaimed as he put his hand on his chest for a more dramatic effect. “That’s good then!” He continued.

The diva mother of the group eyed the maknae carefully, choosing to keep his silence for a while - at least until Minho and Jonghyun was out of earshot. Mother knows his children best, that’s why Kibum knows Taemin best out of all the SHINee members, even Minho, but of course, he would never tell Minho that.

“Jonghyun, you should hurry up. You and Minho will be late for your interview if you keep up this pace.” Jinki told the mischievous member before reaching out to grab the carton of milk across him (but ended up hitting his glass of milk with his elbow and its content spilled all over the table).

“YAH! LEE JINKI, YOU-YOU-YOU IDIOT! ” Kibum screeched as he stood up almost immediately and pointed an accusing finger at the leader’s direction. “CLEAN THIS MESS UP BEFORE I USE YOUR FACE TO CLEAN THIS. GOT THAT?!” And with that, Jonghyun and Minho (he gave Taemin a quick goodbye kiss first) stood up from their seats, grabbed their important belongings and fled the apartment before Kibum’s temper rise for the worse.

Two hours later…

Kibum knocked on Taemin’s door, and when the maknae didn’t open it, he panicked (mental images of Taemin hanging himself or having a wide gash on his wrist flashed by Kibum’s mind) and went to their manager’s room, took out the keys and proceeded to unlock the door himself.

The door swung open, revealing a very, very messy room, courtesy of Taemin, of course.

“Oh… Hyung…” Taemin said a few moments after his mind finally registered that Kibum was standing by the door. “What the hell is this mess, Lee Taemin?! Did you throw a party here while I wasn’t watching you or what?!” Kibum hissed through gritted teeth, narrowing his eyes almost dangerously at Taemin to make it look like he’s glaring. Taemin flinched a little. “I was looking for something, hyung.” He replied, batting his long eyelashes at the diva before smiling sheepishly at him, hoping that he would somehow get away with this. “Don’t give me that look, Taemin.” Kibum warns him, knowing all too well what Taemin was trying to do. “What look?”

“And don’t try to play innocent with me, young man. I know you like the back of my hand.” Kibum warns him again, crossing his arms across his chest to add in more drama as he continued to stare Taemin down. Taemin, in turn, gazed back at Kibum. It was like they were having a staring contest or something like that.

After a few minutes, it was Kibum who broke the silence with a long and deep sigh, followed by a simple question. “What are you looking for, Taemin-ah?”

Taemin shrugged his head before flashing a nervous smile at him. “It’s no big deal, hyung. Don’t worry. I can look for it myself.”

“You’re looking for Minho’s gift, right? His…heart?” Taemin froze. Kibum lifted an eyebrow. Guess he was right after all. “Oh, hyung. Please. Please don’t tell Minho or the others. He’ll get mad at me and then he’ll break up with me! I don’t want that to happen, hyung! Please don’t tell anybody!” Taemin pleaded. Kibum could see the unshed tears in the maknae’s eyes.

Kibum sighed, finally deciding to give up on being stern to Taemin. “Fine. I promise. But you have to tell Minho soon because he’s bound to find out one way or another. And trust me, Minho wouldn’t break up with you even if you lost his gift. He loves you too much, you know.” He says. “…But I don’t know how I should tell him. He’ll get mad at me for losing it. And besides, I broke my promise. I promised I would take good care of the bracelet, yet, I ended up misplacing it. I’m such a bad lover, hyung.” Taemin tells him and he ends up mumbling the last line (but Kibum ends up hearing it anyway). He sits down on the floor and hugs his knees before burying his face on it.

“Stop sulking, Taeminnie. Let’s just go look for that bracelet of yours, okay?” And with that, Kibum and Taemin went back on looking for the missing bracelet.

Three hours later, the bracelet was still nowhere to be found. Taemin was already in the verge of crying while Kibum was doing his best to try and not to strangle their poor, old leader for making things harder for them (Jinki went inside Taemin’s room while the two were busy looking for the said jewelry and ended up scattering the pile of boxes that Kibum had finished arranging so that it will be easier for them to find the bracelet).

“I’m sorry, Kibum-ah, I really am! I didn’t mean to! I swear I didn’t intend to topple over the boxes.” Jinki apologized again and again (in a vain attempt to reduce Kibum’s anger). “You idiot! You shouldn’t have entered the room in the first place! You’re a walking disaster and you know that!” Kibum screeched - still fuming (the mental image of Kibum’s nose and ears flaring up because of sheer anger didn’t help Jinki’s attempt to look sincere).

Jinki frowns and turns back to head out of the room so that he won’t cause anymore problems to the pair. “I just wanted to help…” He mumbled before disappearing into the living room and Kibum finally wonders if he was too harsh to their leader, after all, he really did want to help them.
Four more hours later, both Taemin and Kibum gives up on looking. They have finished rummaging the whole apartment, not just Taemin’s room and they still don’t have a freaking clue where the piece of jewelry was.

“Fuck Jjong. He must’ve hidden it somewhere.” Kibum spat out viciously as he practically threw himself on the couch (earning a grumble from Jinki who was happily sleeping on the other side of the sofa). “Now, now, hyung, let’s not make assumptions.” Taemin told him before sitting on the recliner.

“Oh God, Minho’s gonna be so mad.” Taemin sighs.

“He’s gonna break up with me, hyung. I know it!” He wails once more. Kibum rolls his eyes like usual before trying to knock some sense into the maknae’s mind. “Don’t be stupid, Taeminnie! Minho’s not going to break up with you once he finds out that -“

“If I find out what?” A familiar deep voice suddenly resonated all throughout the room, and both Kibum and Taemin knew that it wasn’t Jinki’s voice.

“Minho!” They both jump up in surprise after finding Minho and Jonghyun by the door. “Hey! That kind of wounded my pride, you know. I’m here too!” Jonghyun said with a childish pout available on his face and once again, Kibum rolls his eyeballs.

“If I find out what?” Minho repeats. This time, his voice was serious and pallid - no pretenses, no amusement, just plain sternness. Taemin gulped. This side of Minho never fails to scare him (maybe because Minho was hardly ever mad?).

“Taemin.” Minho says once Taemin refused to answer. Taemin, on the other hand, looked down at his lap before replying hesitantly. “I…I lost the bracelet you gave me, hyung… I’m sorry…”

He waited for Minho’s reaction (he was kind of waiting for Minho to yell at him or scream at him) but there was none - just painful silence (even Jonghyun and Kibum remained quiet) until he heard the slamming of the door and Taemin didn’t need to look up to see who just left the room.

It was only after two hours that Minho decided to come back to the apartment, but still, he stubbornly refused to talk to anyone, especially Taemin.

Taemin, on the other hand, did everything he can to make Minho forgive him - but everything he did were only vain attempts to Minho. He tried to coax the man all he can but to no avail - Minho only remained cold and silent, giving him the cold shoulder.
Eventually, Kibum shooed Taemin out of Minho’s room since it was already late in the evening.

“Give him some time first, okay, Taeminnie? He won’t stay mad for long, I’m sure of it. I mean, how could he ever stay mad at you? He loves you too much, you know. Just give him some space and time and he’ll eventually get over it. For now, you need to go to sleep.” Kibum told Taemin with a soft smile. This was so unusual of Kibum since he’s always sarcastic and bitchy (in a nice way, of course) but of course, Taemin would never complain.
Taemin’s lips curved into a pout. “But… but what if he stays mad at me for a long time? What if he breaks up with me for losing his gift? I broke my promise, hyung. I broke my promise to him. I promised him that I would never lose that bracelet but… but… I’m such a bad boyfriend, hyung!”

“Nonsense! He’d never break up with you just because of that! Come on, Taeminnie! You know Minho better than that! Sure, he’ll ignore you for a few hours, days even but he’ll never break up with you! But if ever he does, I’ll punch him in the face, stab him with a scissors, tear away his intestines, put them in a blender and feed them to the stray dogs in the streets!”

Taemin winced at Kibum’s morbidity while the other just smiled in return.

The next morning, while Jinki was busy cleaning the mess Taemin (and he was secretly looking for the bracelet again since he doesn’t want Taemin to be sad anymore) made in his room while looking for the missing item, the sight of the big, white teddy bear Minho used in the Hello MV caught his attention (Minho gave Taemin the same gigantic, white teddy bear since Taemin wanted it badly. Ever since then, Taemin and Minho had been parents - with the big white teddy bear which they call “Beary” as their son.). Jinki picked it up gently.

“You know, Beary… Your appas are in a cold war right now. Your Taemin-appa kind of lost the bracelet that Minho gave him. But you know what? They’ll get over this soon since they love each other too much, so don’t worry, okay? Stay here and behave okay? I’ll just look for-“

“WHY THE HELL ARE YOU TRYING TO TALK TO AN INANIMATE OBJECT, LEE JINKI?!” Kibum yelled. “Did you hit your head or something!?”

Suddenly, while the leader and the diva mother of the group were arguing (well, Kibum was doing most of the arguing anyway), the bracelet Taemin was looking for was left ignored on the wrist of Beary’s wrist.

Taemin took of the bracelet from his wrist and carefully clasped them around Beary’s wrist. “Take care of this for me, Beary. Your Minho-appa will get mad if I lose this. I’m entrusting this to you, okay? Take care of it!”

After silly arguments, cold shoulders and loud bickering, Jonghyun finally noticed the heart they were looking for. And at that point of time, Minho was too lovesick (he ended up showering Taemin with hugs, kisses and loving words two hours after he woke up) to care.
