Summary: It was one thing having i n s o m n i a and whole different thing when you become lucid. But escaping reality only alters it, so how will he cope? Or is it really just that complicated? Who knows, maybe insomnia has its perks?

Peace was a virtue. A virtue several didn't have the liberty of experiencing through their day to day life. Euphoria was a blessing. A blessing was divine and was solely given upon those who had faith. Having faith differed against the other two. Trusting in something - genuinely trusting in something - was difficult for most to do, mostly because numerous things could be deceiving. Deception was anomalous - it affected any and everyone in a some way - and horrendously burdensome. And burdens - of course - lead to unadulterated rage. Rage lead to the most obvious of them all which was fear of what came next. Peace. Virtue. Euphoria. Blessing. Trust. Deception. Burden. Rage. Fear.

Combined, the price was hell to pay. And that was exactly what the subconscious revered and cherished.

Perhaps that was what caused minutes to seem like full hours and full hours to appear as days. Or maybe the subconscious was in a daze, mind fuzzy and blurred due to the constant change of atmosphere? Perhaps the flicker of images was flashing too swift to scrutinize. All in all, the mind was a jumbled mess of the evident and the simply unknown.

All the brunette knew was that time halted completely as chocolate orbs fluttered opened to meet with the pleasant peach colored ceiling that appeared disfigured for a few brief moments. A low yawn escaped his slightly bruised lips, a dim purple bruise apparent on the bottom one. Things came into focus as the boy rubbed at his eyes, glancing to the side to check the time.

A quarter till four the clock flashed in a bright green color, bringing brief flashes of life to the otherwise dark room. A groan emitted from his parted lips. He'd have to wake in less than two hours, so what point was there even attempting a return of slumber? He shoved a hat over the bright numbers then laid back down in bed to just stare at the ceiling.

Usually he would've woken in a thin sheen of sweat, or even trembling, but today was simply different. Of course, he wouldn't always wake up that way. He had his good days and bad days and today seemed like an okay one so far.

A pale hand swept across his pink lower lip, barely grazing the bruised and sensitive flesh, with a wince. Just yesterday a gang of bullies attempted to steal his homework and notes for class, and you can guess who lost. Yes, the one with the bruised lip and slightly swollen eye. Being the son of the principal, the guy and his friends exempted detention and any other further sort of punishment. And he didn't bother telling his mother - who already had enough on her plate.

"Ugh.. Life sucks.." Donghae whispered quietly to himself, gently poking the swollen area around his eye delicately.

"Donghae ah, you really should eat.." the blond murmured with a frown, the faint dimple fading from his usual smile. "At least drink your milk." Leeteuk offered, sliding the carton across the table towards the sulking younger boy.

Donghae sat still - elbow on the table with his chin laying in his palm - and stared blankly at the wall with a banister layered across it. He glanced at the blond briefly before give a slight shake of his head, followed by the seventh sigh since they arrived at lunch period. The brunette silently wished the day would go along faster, but knew that wouldn't happen no matter how much he prayed it  would. His gaze slipped from the banister to the clock; 12:16, it read, the clock hand mockingly took its time in rotating. 12:17.

Kibum frowned just a Leeteuk had and poked Donghae's cheek, "Wanna play some soccer later after school, or something?" he offered with a hopeful smile.

The brunette blinked out of his reverie and turned his head, "I dunno.." he breathed, locking the other's gaze, "I feel really tired, so probably not today..." he concluded with an apologetic smile.

Shindong - who sat on the opposing side of Donghae - clapped his back lightly, "Oh come on! Since when do you decline soccer?" he chuckled in amusement, "C'mon, I'll buy you something from the cafeteria!"

"I'm not really hungry.. Honest.." he spoke softly, a pout stubbornly in place.

Across the table Leeteuk groaned inwardly, "Donghae ah! Is this about your insomnia?" he prodded, noticing Donghae's wince at the simple word. "Ah.. I see... Did you take your medicine for it?"

Donghae's pout deepened, and his eyebrows furrowed, "It doesn't work.." a crease appeared in his forehead, like he was troubled with something.

Kibum frowned, too, "You should call us when it doesn't work, Hae.. Call me... I'd be the first to get to you. Your house is only a couple blocks away.." Kibum slung an arm around Donghae's shoulders, comforting him.

Leeteuk nodded enthusiastically, "Yes! I completely agree!" he reached a hand across the table to place over Donghae's cooler one, "We're a call away, Donghae ah. Keep in mind, we'll always be here for you."

Shindong munched on a bag of chips and nodded his agreement, "Of course, I'll make some hot chocolate for you, too! Works for me like a charm!" he winked playfully then smiled warmly.

Donghae smiled momentarily, "Thank you guys.. For being here for me.." he said solemnly, "It makes me feel so much better."

And lunch went by just like that. Genuine, reassuring smiles. Friendly gestures. And numerous whispers of encouragement towards the gloomy brunette. All ended too soon when Donghae found himself in his next period, sitting quietly in the back. None of his close friends were in this class, and it made him feel much worse. On top of that, his lids felt heavy and his brain didn't seem to comprehend what the teacher was announcing. Slumber sounded so peaceful right about now. Silent whispers tugged at the back of Donghae's mind, beckoning him to succumb into the bleak darkness.

Tick Tock. Tick Tock. The clocks constant reminder clicked. The thin hand waving towards the brunettes now sleep clouded eyes. Tick Tock. Tick Tock. The clock mockingly breathed, seeming to get louder each time it passed the twelve. Tick Tock. On the breach of insanity, the brunette groaned inwardly, hands clasping his ears. Tick. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tick. Tock. Monotonous ticks echoed through his pulsing ears, and he felt very crazy.

"Donghae ah, what's up with you?" Kibum murmured from beside him, hitting him in the head with a balled up piece of paper.

Donghae stiffened, and glanced over, "N-nothing. I'm totally fine." he replied dreamily, eye twitching heedlessly.

"You seem pretty tense. And I'm worried, really." Kibum pleaded, "C'mon. You can tell me if something's up." Kibum prodded, lips curling down in a frown, "Do you not trust me?" he asked hesitantly, heart racing at the possibility of the outcome.

Donghae gulped then glanced once more at his concerned looking friend, "I'm fine, just leave me alone~" he groaned, laying his head on his desk, the coolness feeling delightful against his flushed cheek.

Kibum sighed deeply and felt like a failure, "Alright.." he went back to scribbling in his notebook, watching the boy from his peripheral, "I care about you.. Okay?" he said cautiously, "Just keep that in mind.."

Donghae raised his head for a moment to glance thoughtfully at Kibum for the last time. His brow furrowed at the hopeless expression on the raven haired boys face. Something inside him shrieked that it was his fault. He felt depressed due to his numerous sleepless nights, and now he was bringing down his friends as well. Dejected, the boys eyes fluttered to a close, ignoring the world around him for the hour remaining of class.

Hours passed till school came to an end. Outside of the double doors to freedom, three people stood awaiting their sleep deprived friends arrival. Minutes ticked by, and still no sign of the pale boy with dark crescent under his eyes. There they stood, feet tapping patiently with eyes trained on the double doors. Numerous people passed by, but not Donghae.

"Where do you think he is, Kibum?" Leeteuk asked, eyes filled with apprehension, wrinkles appearing in his forehead.

Kibum shrugged a shoulder wholeheartedly, "Dunno.. I knew he had to pick extra assignments, but I figured he'd be here by now." the boy stated, eyebrows raising as he check his wrist watch.

"Should I go to the principal and have Donghae come here through an intercom message?" the grinning boy Shindong asked, fingers tapping absently at the door.

Leeteuk thought that over a moment then nodded with agreement, "Go on, we'll be here when you get back." Shindong nodded then Leeteuk turned to younger, raven haired boy with a suspicious glance, "Kibum ah, are you hiding something?" the elder inquired, dimple appearing as he smiled smugly.

Kibum raised an eyebrow then smiled within seconds, "I don't get what you mean to be honest. What could I be hiding that the ever-so-intuitive Leeteuk can't crack?" Kibum replied back, the riddle evident.

"Perceptive to the subject, correct?" Leeteuk chuckled, the tension between them building, "Ah, I see. So, it is correct. Are the seeds finally amplifying?" Leeteuk challenged, raising an eyebrow, a slight twinkle appearing in his eyes.

"The seeds, so to speak, are animating. Is it.. Such a horrid thing?" Kibum asked, their intelligent conversation baffling those around them.

Leeteuk beamed, "So, being theoretical, things are fabricating?" he spoke with a hopeful tone, dimples making him appear childish as he grinned brightly.

Kibum tapped a finger against his chin then nodded slightly, "Correct." A slight flush painted his face, along with a fortunate grin.

"Intriguing." Leeteuk replied, ruffling the younger's hair affectionately.

Shindong raised an eyebrow when the other two finally took a glance at him, "Uh.. What was that?" he sniggered, "Talking in codes, huh? Trying to out me in a way I don't understand?" he bellowed, patting Leeteuk’s back with a smirk. "Fine, it's cool with me. I don't like that smart talk anyway." he grinned at the flushed Kibum, "Are you blushing?"

When school ended it's usual monotonous tone, Donghae had made an attempt to escape through the back of the school, that way was much more convenient. He had heard a gruff voice announce that his 'ride' was waiting for him in the front, then just shook his head dismissively. Since Donghae had received a note in 6th period, he'd decided that he wouldn't meet his friends.

"And where do you think you're goin‘?" An antagonizing voice screeched, the sound of shoes pounding against the tiles toward him. Donghae paused then stood still, eyes glued to the ground, "Just hold on you pansy."

Donghae turned on his heel and gulped as a much larger boy towered over him, "Yes?" he asked in a tiny voice.

The boy just smirked, "How cute." he scoffed, rolling his eyes, "Now, got my Algebra work for me? I need it to turn in." he said harshly, gripping the front of Donghae's shirt, pulling him forward, "Give it here." he demanded.

Donghae winced slightly, shirt collar constricting around his neck, "I-Uh.. It's right h-here.. In my bag, lemme get it.." he said quietly, sighing when he was released. He made a move to reach in his bag and took off running out the double doors, sprinting swiftly down the sidewalk without looking back.

Later that day . . .

Donghae told his mom that he had tons of homework and extra credit to do, so the kind woman left him alone in his room for the rest of the day. Silently, he threw his bag down and collapsed on his bed. Chocolate orbs drifted towards the ceiling, an exhausted sigh escaping his lips.

Whether Donghae would admit it or not, he wished life was like the movies. In almost every movie, the nerdy-like character would somehow redeem himself and become the most popular kid in school. And as of now, that just wasn't the case. All in all, he had average looks. Big, chocolate eyes. Silky brunette hair. Plump, pink lips. Just the right shade of pale - not alabaster or ghostly - just right. He had even, straight pearls for teeth. Sharp jaw line. And just recently he'd gotten contacts - he looked too geeky with his thin, black glasses.

"How normal.." he murmured, staring straight at the ceiling.

-

Minutes ticked by a faint knock sounded on the wooden door. Chocolate orbs flashed open in an instant, curiously eying the door with a small smile. Who could it be? Quietly, the brunette tip toed towards the door, the knock sounded once more. Brunette hair fell into the boys eyes, and he was quick to huff it away with a breath. A hand reached out to grasp cool brass door knob, slowly enclosing it then with an exhale, opened it.

"Hello there," A man with dark hair spoke, voice warm and welcoming.

Donghae's eyebrows pulled together, taking a moment to gaze fully at the man before him. He was an inch or two taller than him, with dark hair that was brushed into his eyes which twinkled with life. He wore a light grey shirt with a thin, white hoodie which speckled with grey. His pale skin seemed to match the white skinny jeans he wore. And of course, he finished it off with white air force ones, the check mark grey in color.

"Who are you? Better yet, how'd you even get in here?" Donghae asked, cocking his head to the side, the room seeming to change rapidly.

"What do you mean?" the man asked curiously gazing around the now pure white room, "You know who I am." he smiled broadly, "How could you not know who I am?" he leaned against a white pillar, eyes sparkling as the room came into place; shades of white, light grey, and very light blue.

Donghae shook his head in disbelief, "I'm so dreaming right now. I have to be." he said, glancing around warily. "I'm dreaming aren't I?" he asked the man, noticing the crystal tear ornaments hanging from the ceiling.

The man narrowed his eyes dangerously for a moment, "No, you are not dreaming. Don't ever think that you are." his natural state returned as he relaxed against the towering pillar once more. "Think of it as an alternate reality like those movies you love." he smiled genuinely.

"Alternate reality- How do you know I like those types of movies?" Donghae asked quickly, nibbling his surprisingly unbruised bottom lip.

The unknown man shrugged a shoulder, "Think of me as your subconscious." he walked towards Donghae - who took several steps back - and held out a hand, "We'll talk, okay?" he smiled slightly, "C'mon, don't be scared of me. This is your world, I'll be who you want me to be." he offered, frowning when the boy just shook his head.

"I-.. I just wanna get outta here… I have papers and assignments to do for school… And I still haven't eaten dinner… And this proves I'm crazy because I'm dreaming all this stuff up.." Donghae nearly shouted, mostly to himself, "Alright.. I've finally lost it.." he mumbled, running his trembling fingers through his hair, "But what i-if you're right and all? Alternate reality.. Err, well.. This just doesn't make sense.. Uh-Well.. Uhm, just.." Donghae groaned then pulled at strands of his hair lightly, "This isn't real." he began to chant over and over.

The man growled deeply, apparently figments of the imagination got offensive too. He stalked up to Donghae and glared, "If it's just a dream, how bout' just waking yourself up? You're being irrational, and I do not tolerate such things." he threatened, eyes narrowing to slits, "I'm showing hospitality, at least pretend that you believe, you dimwit."

Donghae frowned suddenly, "If I go with you, will you somehow wake me up?" he asked cautiously, eying the other's hand, the man simply nodded. "I'm dreaming anyway, it shouldn't matter.." he murmured just before taking the mans hand, and the everything whirled.

( A/N: This is sort of how I imagined it. )

It seemed the world whizzed before his eyes, transforming into some sort of differential atmosphere. Vibrant, electric blues swirled in the distance, along with vivid and beautiful hues of purple from nearby trees. The ground was covered in rich, vivacious greens, bright yellows, and swirls of magenta. A kaleidoscope of colors filled the new land. Salmon pink, light green, and azure painted the sky.

( A/N; The Sky )

"W-what?" Donghae breathed, gazing around the rainbow of colors before him. Tiny, lavender-white butterflies fluttered past his face and his eyes widened. "Where are we?" Donghae asked, reaching blindly for the mans arm. The golden twinkles of light around him almost brought him to tears. Never in his life had he experienced something so beautiful and welcoming.

The man chuckled, "If you want to answer, you gotta ask me by my name." he ruffled the boys hair and sat on a bright pink and orange ringed stump.

Donghae glanced back at the man and smiled, "Hyukjae?" he said softly, not even pausing to think  of how he came up with the name, "Where are we?"

Hyukjae's smile just broadened, "This is one of my favorite places." he admitted after a minute, a wispy ball of light landing in his palm, he offered to Donghae, "It's beautiful here." he released the ball into Donghae's palm then chuckled at the tickling sensation it left.

"B-but.. What is this place?" Donghae asked again, for the third time, giggling at the tickling in his palm.

"Dunno. But you made it, so I think you should name it." Hyukjae responded almost instantaneously, "Come up with something equally as astonishing." he said, eyes closing to enjoy the waterfalls roar in the distance.

(A/N; Waterfall will also appear later in another chapter)

Donghae was flabbergasted, eyes wide with skepticism. "M-me? No, no, no.. I-I can't think of things like this.." he shook his head, dismissing the idea.

Hyukjae pulled Donghae's trembling arm, and sat the boy beside him, "Don't be so bloody humble." he murmured, crossing his arms over his chest in mild jealousy. "Even I know you're a genius." he rolled his eyes, "Don't even deny it." he said, when the boy opened his mouth to disagree. "Are you just gonna stare with your mouth open or are you gonna live a little and explore?" Hyukjae teased, poking Donghae playfully on the cheek.

"Yah~ Don't insinuate that I'm a coward..." Donghae whined, frowning deeply, the familiar crease of his forehead becoming more apparent.

Hyukjae gently punched Donghae's arm, "Did I ever call you a bloody chicken?" he chuckled, hopping off the stump and pulling on the boys arm once again, "C'mon now- Look!" he pointed in the direction of a forming rainbow, "See? We're already missing things. Now, come along." he said, pulling the awestruck boy behind him.
