1. When I started shipping them:

About three years, ago, maybe a little more (see juvenile glee post here: ). At first, just because I thought that the whole 'when a girl slaps you it = love' thing was funny. I think it was when I started taking more interest in Orihime's character that I started to pay more attention to their relationship. I became a rabid shipper on the UlquiHime FC on BA.

2. What I think their challenge is:

Obviously, that they're two such different people. Then that, well, one of them isn't even a person, per se. There's no way these two are going to end up together (although I won't say 'never', because Kubo Tite is a wonderful, magical manga-ka...). I feel that Ulquiorra represents a piece of Hime, something vital to her growth, more than a viable love interest. I'd say their canon challenge is empathy and understanding for one another, which they've overcome, a little bit (despite Ulquiorra's best attempts to the contrary). As a fanfic writer, the greatest challenge would be for them to actually 'get ( ... )

I'm really happy to hear that other people are optimistic about them. :) I wouldn't rule out a happy ending entirely, I just think it's way difficult. Like I said - Kubo is magical. And, as you pointed out, notably coy.
