The tat's looking good. I'm a little surprised it's not finished yet, though. How much longer will it take?

In answer to your question over in my lj: I've never seen jalapenos of habaneros in a regular Japanese supermarket. Sometimes you can get canned jalapenos at import food specialty shops, but that takes a special trip. You can also find jalapenos on Spicy MosBurgers, and on the occasional pizza. Very rarely, Strawberry Cones (the pizza chain) offers something with what they claim is habanero tomato sauce, but I've never tried it.

You can get dried Thai red chili peppers in the supermarket, as well as ground chili pepper. However, apart from those, there's not really a lot of "spicy" to be had. Out of curiosity, why do you ask?

Question 1: Well, I'm not sure how long the tat's going to take. Dawn's technique involves her going over the same patch of skin over and over and over ... and over ... and over ... It takes a while. And, you know, hurts like a b*tch ( ... )

Response to your reply to question 1: Ouch.

Response to your reply to question 2: That's pretty keen. I'll have to find my way down there while you're here, assuming you'll be free to hang out. Actually, I have seen green chiles here, of the Old El Paso canned variety, but they take some finding. You can actually get taco kits, jars of salsa, and stuff like that, but it's all imported so you have to look in import stores.

My answer to question 3: I guess I forgot to mention it, but you can get crushed red pepper here. I have a little mill that I got at a supermarket a long time ago. I don't know about getting it in bulk, though, and I've never seen it available when I've gone for pizza. I wonder of togarashi (those thai peppers I mentioned) would work? They come dried but whole...

Could you do me a favor? This is a lot to ask, and I'm sorry, but could you dig up the name of a food distribution company or two? Maybe just from whatever phone book you have? If I can just find some companies on the web, maybe I can get a clearer picture of what I have to work with.

The local phonebook is proving somewhat unhelpful, at least as yet. If you're looking online and think the cafe you're consulting for can bear near-retail prices, the Foreign Buyer's Club may be able to get what you need. Taking a quick look at the search results for "Mexican," I see dried pinto beans, sliced jalapenos (not fresh, sorry), corn and flour tortillas, chipotle, serrano and tomatillo (canned, I think), and a whole lot of stuff that isn't actually Mexican. A lot of this stuff is available by the case.

Anyway, this may be a good place to start. As a bonus, FBC is located in Kobe, which might make doing business easier for your cafe-owner friend.
