Prologue]
It was dark around him. If only he could move, he would have checked the time. The sky was still dark, so he was guessing it was around five in the morning. He had to get up now if he wanted breakfast. Well, it wasn't like she was going to give him any. As much as possible, he wanted to completely avoid being beaten into a pulp today. He had physical education during the second period. Tegoshi Yuya could not afford to fail.
Slowly and in pain, he sat up. For two hours he had slept, trying to forget everything that happened the night before. A new series of bruises turned
purple, and was still completely fresh. He would have to hurry up before she wakes up and add bruises to the bruise. Gods, why did she have to hit him behind? A normal boy could get up in five seconds, a normal boy could walk to the bathroom in three, a normal boy could take a bath and get dressed in ten minutes. But he wasn't a normal boy.
Images came to him. She was yelling. She called him a monster. She called him a freak. He was four at that time. And after she had hit him and forced him to stay in the dark corner. He stayed there the whole morning. Then a boy... reached for him.
He gasped and found himself awake again, in the bathtube. There was that boy again. He had been getting the same dreams nearly over and over again for the past month, and he never knew why. Contemplate as he might, he didn't understand why out of all the times he could have dreamt about the boy, it was early this summer. The one time he returned to that corner and slept, it was the time the little boy, whose smile brightened his world, appeared.
Who was he?
"Takahisa! You've got to stop eating already!" His mother scolded. She had a strict face, but it was a mother's face. Masuda Takahisa gulped down the food left on his plate, and he looked at his mother. Her face softened and she shook her head. "Taka-chan, you have to leave or else you'll be late. It's your first day of school, too." The boy's eyes widened and looked up at the clock in the wall. He choked.
"Mou, Takahisa!" His mother moved to his side to pat his back. He drank the rest of his juice and kissed his mom's cheek. "I'll be leaving now!"
He didn't know how long and how far he ran, all he knew was that he ran as if his legs had a mind of his own. Of course he was running because he was late, but as far as he knew, he's never been to this place. Not before. Even so-- everything was familiar. It seemed as though he walked down this road everyday when he was a child. Then he fell back.
"Ah! Sorry!" A boy--younger than him, but close his age--apologized with a deep voice. He looked at the boy wearing the same uniform. Silence, then the ring of watches. "Yabai!" They said, and they ran together.
"Tegoshi Yuya, you're late again! This is the third time this month. Are you sure you're okay?" The teacher told him. She wasn't particularly angry. She didn't even know what was going on with him. Tegoshi looked away, silently pleading for her to stop. He made no move to talk or any other movement. He bit his lip, trying to prevent himself from saying anything. The teacher opened her mouth to say something again, but the door slid open, making a very loud noise.
Two boys leaned onto the doorway and panted. She glared at the two of them. "Tegoshi, you may sit now. Kato! This is the first time I've seen you late. Seeing as the new student is late with you, your scolding will be kept for later. Return to your seat. Masuda, front and center!" The two boys flinched and did what they were told.
"Students, this is Masuda Takahisa." The teacher informed them as she walked to the board and wrote his name. He bowed and smiled. "Nice to meet all of you! Looking forward to the rest of the school year with everyone." Whispers made by giggling girls, and boys either threatened or interested (not in the way you're thinking, I suppose). "Very well. On the farthest left, if you please." He walked happily towards the pointed seat and greeted nearly everyone he passed. When he sat down, he saw the boy he bumped into that morning. He smiled apologetically and bowed. The other boy shook his head and mouthed that it was okay.
So, it was just another simple day.
He never thought it was going to end, chemistry. Masuda leaned back and stretched. After stretching, he quickly stood up and looked around.
"Masuda," a deep voice called him. "I'm pretty sure you don't know the way around school, so if you'd like you're welcome to come with us." It was Kato. Masuda smiled but couldn't help asking, "Us?"
"Yeah. Another friend of mine is a year higher than us. He's really talkative so you'll know what is where in no time." They started walking towards the cafeteria. At the other end of the hallway, a tall boy was smiling and waving at their way. "Shige! Hurry up! The gyoza's almost gone!" Kato twitched and called out the same way, "Who eats gyoza in school, Kei?" He slapped his hand on his head, looking ashamed. Until he suddenly felt a wind pass by, he never looked up.
"Gyoza?! Now!? We have to hurry!" Kato blinked and watched the new boy pulling the taller boy downstairs. He had no choice but to follow now. As the three of them reached downstairs, the one place that was filled with people were the ones who have the gyoza. The three stared. Masuda raised his sleeves and took a fighting position. "...what exactly are you going to do?" Kato asked, raising an eyebrow. When the other boy opened his mouth to reply, a great blur passed the two of them towards the place selling gyoza.
"..." Both of them stared at the said blur that was Kei. "AAHH!!" Masuda yelled and attacked right after. Kato continued staring with wide eyes. He closed his eyes and groaned. Slowly, he walked to a table and absolutely regretted introducing the two.
His heart was beating so fast that time. That boy... Masuda... He seemed so familiar. At that moment when the boy smiled after introducing himself, flashbacks appeared so suddenly. The young boy whose smile lit his world... the smile that reached out to him when he was in the dark. Why did it seem like the same smile? Tegoshi furrowed his eyebrows and squinted his eyes from underneath the tree. The sun was still shining even though the leaves were blocking it. He reached for the sky and tried to block the light with his hand.
"Yo!" A voice said, and a face appeared right in front of him. The smile... Tegoshi's eyes grew wide for a moment and covered his eyes with the arm he stretched. "Just thought you felt lonely. You wouldn't mind if I sat here with you, would you?" Masuda asked, sitting down beside him. Tegoshi felt his heart beating loudly again. He was nervous around a guy he doesn't even know! What else could possibly happen?
"I mind, thank you very much." He felt like kicking himself. He couldn't believe how cold that sounded like. He didn't mean it, it just came out. He was so used to being alone, it seemed natural for him to shut people out.
"Oh... well, I'll stay here for me, then." Masuda said, and lied down beside him.
