Here it is, as promised -- the first installment of the
Kaleidoscope series.
There are little fragments in this that actually date back to October of 2006, when I thought I would be writing a short Remus/Tonks chapter-fic and posting the chapters in order. (Ha, and ha!) I've also folded in a
drabble that was originally written for
drumher, and a little

And so is Remus, it's just so perfect that he would think that a prank would get Sirius out of a bad mood, I love it! I can't wait to read the second installment and find out what Remus and Tonks will get up too!

I think at this point in his life, Remus was pretty happy overall -- I bet there was a lot of pranking in 12GP that year. ;)

(Although I'm slightly embarrassed that at a mere mention of Prof. Snape, my reaction is now more along the lines of "Aww. Snape." as opposed to my former attitude of either finding him a rude bastard or taking no notice of his presence at all - which sadly is the general reaction to him from most characters in the books as well! - It's amazing how insidious fanfic can be in shaping your opinions of characters! I think every good fic that you read stays with you a bit during the next one in terms of how you read characters, and fanfic definitely affects the way I read the canon books. To the point where I forget that such and such a situation didn't happen in JKR's world.)

(I don't think Snape will play a big role in Kaleidoscope, except to irritate Sirius from time to time, but I do hope to write him more someday... I did amuse myself with an AU drabble, and I've played around with a little DH-era Snapefic.)

I also liked Sirius being more "unbalanced" than the horrible drunk he always seems to be in fic. Is the drinking an invention of fic? Can't remember if it was ever mentioned in HP. I think being unbalanced makes him a bit more sympathetic than just raging drunk!
Looking forward to reading the rest in order now!

I think Tonks will have to trip over that umbrella stand once or twice, but I didn't want it to be every time. You're so right that there has to be a limit to how clumsy she can be and still be an Auror.
I feel so sorry for Sirius, spending the last year of his life trapped in the house he hated so much. :( In OotP, when Harry and the Weasleys Floo to 12GP after Arthur is attacked by Nagini, JKR does show that Sirius has been drinking -- but even then he's nowhere near completely drunk.

This was a lovely introduction to both Kaleidoscope and the characters themselves. How young Tonks seems back at this point in time: full of determination, eagerness and professional pride (loved how thrilled she was at Kingsley's use of 'good'). Easy to see how she'd appeal to Sirius, bringing both past and future with her like Harry, and the gruff affection between her and Mad-Eye was a nice glimpse at their relationship. Most of all, I liked seeing her as a careful junior Auror, while also a clever one, who learns about security charms and people by listening and watching ( ... )

I'm very happy to hear that Tonks and Remus come across as younger and more innocent here, since I've been writing so much of the later parts of the series lately, heh. In my head, this Tonks is very idealistic, and she hasn't lost a cousin (for real this time) or had her heart broken yet. And Remus, after where I left him in "Order," is feeling secure in his friendship with Sirius and happier than he's been in years.
The original plan was to alternate POVs in this installment as a way of getting to know the characters, but Tonks simply wouldn't yield the floor! So it'll be Remus's turn (unless it's Sirius?) in the next one.

You describe your characters so well, and your writing is great. Since I'm very much in love with Remus Lupin, heh... ;-) I really enjoy your Remus/Tonks stories. He really deserves some happiness, poor guy.
I always pictured them starting their relationship sometime during OotP, a year that in spite of the situation with Voldemort and the ministry, may have been a very happy time for Remus. Being with friends, being able to contribute. You describe it so well. So I think that he may have let his guards down, and permitted himself to be with Tonks. Then Sirius' death, and not to mention the mission Dumbledore sends him on, throws him back into reality.
But hey, your way is great too, and in many ways better. You literally bring me to tears often when I read your stories, and this was a fantastic start to the series.
I hope you will continue to give us some more R/T stories!

Oh, yes, I think that idea works very well too. But before I discovered fanfic, I had already imagined a world where Remus and Tonks didn't really get together until after HPB, and I'm enjoying trying to write that version.
I hope you will continue to give us some more R/T stories!
Oh, yes! I am committed to finishing Kaleidoscope, even if it takes a while. I've been working on a new chapter this summer that I hope I will be able to post soon.
