Oh heh, chapters like this is why this series is near and dear to my heart.
What a clever visual/metaphorical depiction of a typical "math contest" type problem -- and the two divergent approaches to tackling them.
(Oh, Asano. Oh, Karma. [I've been in both their shoes before -- that's part of the fun of this kind of problem!])
From the questions we see described (a bit awkwardly translated tho atm), this is surprisingly accurate though for a "challenging" middle school* test. A combination of contest-type problems (which the vast majority of US students are never exposed to) and basic concepts.
(By basic concepts I do not mean the typical US curriculum, which has barely even covered basic algebra at this point. Yeah, I believe algebra is pretty standard at this age everywhere, but have you SEEN the standard CA "algebra" textbooks? /horror)
(That test for sure is evil though. I bet most US high school students couldn't handle series -- and series in the high school texts I've looked at are already extremely dumbed down/mostly just rote memorization.)
(The little hints we get at Koro-sensei's methodology are such a joy too. Especially the way he handles Terasaka. XD)
* to clarify, they're in the US equivalent of 9th grade, and the material they're covering seems to be around our "Algebra II"/advanced algebra level. (Although considering 50% of the CA "Algebra II" text is actually "Algebra I redux"...)
