Ok. I thought it was bad. But this is BAAAAD.
I was sick this weekend into Monday so when the preacher man showed up again this week to see if I'd bring a repeat performance I was not there. From what I hear however I started a movement. He was heavily contested by more people than he ever encountered before.
So he brought reinforcements.
I was minding my business sitting on the second floor balcony of the student center today when a group of very oddly dressed cultist looking folks gathered on the far side of the courtyard. Before long they had erected signs, were wearing protest cards, and even had their children holding a laundry list of people who will burn in hell. (Sorry mormons, potty mouths, and atheists.) These people were the worst of the worst. They set up a perimeter defense of thugs around the area and walled off their main blowhards so no one could back them down or contest their views. (Consequently, it made them very hard to hear over the general ruckuss of a busy commons.)
Their message of condemnation and hate was contested by everyone. I joined in for a little while since I had a bit of time on my hands. Catholics, baptists, and atheists alike were telling them quite clearly what their message of eternal hell and hate for others was doing. Turning them away from god. (And generally making everyone hate them. Sadly they thrive on hate.) I even overheard one of the pamphlet bearers arguing with a young southern belle:
Girl: "What you are doin' is disrespectin' god and turnin' them away from the lord!"
Zealot: "All who sin deserve eternal hell!"
Girl: "No! My Jesus talks about salvation and love and what yer doin' is turnin' them away from MY Jesus and I'm not happy with that!"
Zealot: "I'm GLAD I'm turning them away from your Jesus!"
They were really determined to be total asses. People made their own signs to protest the crazies. The crazies would actually go around and take pictures of the signs, apparently to provide evidence to their inner circle that everyone but them is evil and hates god. Come to find out those children... indoctrinated... home-schooled. They were breeding holy warriors.
It was kind of scary to be honest. I was talking to the police who were managing the protests. It was utterly ridiculous. He actually said the anti-war protests and civil rights protests of his day were more peaceful!
In the end no fists were swung, but the commons did catch fire not long after they left.
Food for thought.
