"How strange it is to be anything at all"

Mar 17, 2008 17:37

Yeah, so I do exist. I'm back in the States again... think I'm gonna stay this time. I said goodbye to my research group last week, which was a kind of strange experience,
and took a 747 back to Los Angeles again. Its been a pretty strange year so far, that much is certain. I think December and January took a bigger chunk out of me than
I really realized, and February turned out to be mostly a bust. Went back to Switzerland 3 weeks ago, for a last push on some research stuff that turned out to be a little less
than I had hoped.

Still, in a way its been a big couple of months for me:

1. I got engaged.
2. We published a paper.
3. I am formally a Ph.D. candidate (almost two years after I finished all my candidacy requirements. Turns out that filling the form actually matters)
4. I looked for jobs with the military industrial complex.
5. I did a bunch of writing for my thesis.
6. We did an experiment that looks like it might have worked.
7. Scheduled my unofficial thesis defense for Good Friday (it's a long, embarassing story). Good Friday is *this* friday... for all my heathens out there. Um, represent?

On the other hand:
1. I still haven't finished my thesis.
2. I still don't have a job.

My finely tuned analytical skills lead me to believe that 1 and 2 are in fact strongly correlated.

Fun facts:
1. Jim has never been to Europe without the US dollar setting a new currecy record (ala the 1962 mets).
2. Jim would prefer to be employed in an industry that does not directly contribute to the rise of Skynet systems and the search for John Connor.
3. There has been a severe economic downturn contemporary to each time Jim has begun the job search process.
4. "For they that sow the wind shall reap the whirlwind" Hos 8:7
