It was never really hard for him to tell what was on his partner's mind. Add that to the fact that before they even started anything, the limits of this relationship were made crystal clear.
This was just temporary.
They've agreed upon holding on until one of them finds someone they treasure more. They've agreed to stop, just like that. No questions asked.
But he never really thought that was going to happen.
That was why when he felt his stomach curl in discomfort at the recent news, he decided to step up to him.
“Let's end this.”
Once the words left his lips, his heart felt like it was being stabbed by a thousand knives.
Sho didn't say anything. He merely kept his mouth shut, lips tight in a straight line.
Ohno could no longer take Sho's penetrating gaze, so before he could crumble into pieces he chose to walk away.
-
Surprisingly, things didn't change much for the two of them on the surface.
Talks of Sho's recent scandal involving a certain female announcer still remained rampant, with Sho not giving any comments to either confirm or deny the relationship, further inflicting pain on Ohno's heart.
Despite all of that, Sho remained quite civil with him, talking to him as if things were normal, fussing over him when he refuses to eat.
Nino says the man was only trying to maintain the group harmony. But the knowing look from the younger man makes him raise his eyebrow.
-
Ohno never wished for conflict of any form. He was never one to disrupt the group dynamics like that. But he should've known Sho wouldn't just stop acting like his lover when all of them knew the man very well to know he's just too damn caring. And that trait of his was confusing Ohno's heart and ultimately hurts him all the more.
Everyone is aware that Ohno's patience stretches for a thousand miles. But apparently, even that runs out.
“Stop being nice to me! I don't need your pity.”
No one could fault him for lashing out now.
“Wha--”
“I knew you were going to break up with me.” The clear look of hurt on Ohno's eyes silenced Sho.
Sho looked at his feet, closed his eyes, and took a deep breath before opening his eyes and directing his gaze to the older man's eyes. “Is that why you broke up with me first?”
The intensity of Sho's gaze crumbled Ohno's building anger. “No,” he whispered, even though his heart was saying something else.
“Then why?” Sho challenged.
Ohno let out a sigh as he looked away from the smoldering gaze. “It doesn't matter.” “It does.” Sho intercepted.
The other three members who were in the room with them remained quiet as they watched the exchange happening between the two oldest members.
When it seemed as if no one was going to speak up, the seemingly least interested member set aside his game console and stood up from his seat, walked up to the two and stood between them, his back to Ohno.
Ninomiya conjured up the guts to pat Sho on the shoulder making Aiba flinch, and Jun give him an approving look. “Sho-chan, surely you must know that our Leader here, is one proud guy...” Nino chanced a look at the old man behind him, “...burning with manliness.”
Sho raised a brow at his statement. “What does that have to do with anything?”
“Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Sho-chan, that has everything to do with things!” Chuckling, Ninomiya moved his arm to rest on Ohno's shoulder. Ohno didn't bother to look up at them.
“Leader here, doesn't want to admit you could hurt him by breaking up with him. His pride won't allow it.” Seemingly proud of himself, Ninomiya grinned at the grumbling Ohno.
Finally understanding the situation they have gotten themselves into, Sho couldn't stop himself from screaming in frustration, “BUT I WASN'T GONNA BREAK UP WITH HIM IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!”
That caught Ohno's attention. He gave Sho a disbelieving look and a questioning, “Eh?”
Jun finally decided to speak up and ask the question nobody had enough balls to ask. “Aren't you dating Ogawa Ayaka?”
“I'M NOT!!!” Sho was all flustered and confused at the same time as he denied the rumor to his bandmates. But as Ohno grabbed his hand and looked straight into his eyes, he calmed down.
“Are you being serious?” There was a sparkle of hope in Ohno's eyes that made Sho smile. “I am.”
“Then-- I went through all of that misery for nothing?!” He sounded frustrated but, everyone could tell how relieved their leader was.
And Nino, being Nino, just had to have the final say, “You know each other too well, you automatically make assumptions. You're both so stupid you suit each other.”
The two oldest men met each other's gazes and broke out in laughter. This was a lesson Ohno never wanted to repeat. Ever.
