“...so beautiful.”

The lady blushed and lifted up a hand to cover her lips. “T-Thank you...” Only then did Ohno realize he had voiced out his thoughts. His cheeks burned as well, and he looked away, ruffling his hair in slight embarrassment. The action made the lady giggle.

It was by coincidence that he had called out to her. After taking care of his business in the comfort room, he could no longer find his way back to the cafe where his best friend was waiting for him.

He felt his heart beat fast at the sound of her laughter, and he chanced a look at the woman in front of him, smiling all the while.

With the same smile reflected on her lips, the lady asked, “Did you need anything?”

A small sound, “Ah.” came out and Ohno finally remembered why he called out to her in the first place. “I was going to ask if you knew how to get to Johnny's Cafe.”

The lady's eyes brightened as she clapped her hands together, “I'm going there as well, we should go together.” At the lady's suggestion, Ohno couldn't help but feel warmth in his chest.

He noticed then that the lady had some luggage with her, and he immediately offered to assist her on their way to the cafe.

“Is it really okay?” She was a bit hesitant but at Ohno's insistence, she finally agreed.

*

Once their eyes met, Jun waved him over to his table. Ohno turned to the lady next to him and Jun followed his gaze. Ohno noticed the way his eyes widened before his attention was caught by the sound of the lady's voice, “Jun!”

*

“Eh? Cousin?”

Ohno blinked.

“Yeah. She's the one we're here to pick up.” Jun affirmed.

Earlier this morning, Ohno decided to crash his friend's house, but apparently Jun had other plans for the day. He was about to leave for the airport to pick up his cousin when Ohno arrived. Seeing the disappointed look on his friend's face, Jun's heart swelled with warmth and in that instant, he offered to let Ohno tag along.

The lady smiled and bowed, “My name is Sakurai Shoko.” Ohno bowed in return as he introduced himself as well, “I'm Ohno Satoshi.”

Jun observed the way the two were looking at each other, there was a certain spark in both of their eyes. “But what a coincidence, isn't it? I was really surprised that the two of you were together when you came in.” Shoko smiled, “Me too. I didn't think Ohno-san was Jun's friend.”

“And to think this person even helped you with your luggage.” Jun quipped. “What? We were going the same way.” Ohno defended his actions.

To be honest, it amused Jun a lot. In the last ten years they had been friends, Ohno never once voluntarily treated a woman this kindly. In the past, whenever Ohno was in a relationship, Jun even had to nudge Ohno to help his girlfriends with carrying their stuff just so the guy would act.

*

“Shoko-chan will be staying at our house for a while.” Jun told him once they got in the car, and he could easily see the sparkle in Ohno's eyes at what he said. It made him smile.

The stolen glances both of his passengers were shooting each other amused Jun. Whenever Ohno would sneak a look, Shoko would look away, and it was the same vice versa. He watched through his rear view mirror the quiet exchange happening merely inches from him.

*

They were casually chatting around the dining table when Jun decided to be a little helpful. “So, are you seeing anyone back at your town?” As expected, his question piqued Ohno's interest, Jun could tell with the way his back straightened despite not taking his gaze away from his hands, and he didn't fail to see the shy glance Shoko shot his friend before she answered. “No.. I don't have anyone right now.”

The spark of hope apparent in Ohno's eyes inspired him to ask more relevant questions about his cousin. It was the first time he saw Ohno so attentive to a conversation that doesn't concern fishing, art, or himself. He could sense the level of attraction Ohno was harboring towards his cousin was on an entirely different plane.

*

“As her cousin, I won't mind if you ask Shoko-chan out on a date.” It was Jun's most honest opinion. Ohno was one of the best and kindest people Jun had ever known, and Jun knew a lot of people. He was certain that Ohno would treat her well.

In truth, Jun had this seriously major crush on Shoko in the past, when they were little kids playing house. He had actually considered taking her as his bride back then. But that was only when they were younger. Before Jun even realized his inclination.

Now, a certain gamer brat had a firm hold of his heart.

The smile Ohno showed him right then was the brightest he's ever seen and for a moment, Jun was glad that he told Ohno what he had.

*

“Do you... maybe... want to have dinner with me sometime?” Ohno wasn't used to this asking someone out thing and it took him all he had just to get all the words out. He could feel himself blush profusely as he anxiously waited for the answer.

Shoko's breath was caught in her throat and it took her more than a heartbeat to answer, but when she regained her composure, her eyes crinkled in adoration for the man in front of her and she eagerly nodded, “Okay.” she whispered.

The moment Shoko replied, Ohno felt his knees weaken and he fell to the ground. It worried Shoko a bit but when she saw the expression on Ohno's face, it made her giggle.

Soon, the sound of both of their laughter filled the air.

*

Banging on his door and waking him up without much care, Aiba and Nino decided it was a good time to ask Ohno some stuff.

They must've heard about Shoko-chan.

Lounging too comfortably on his couch, Nino started,

“J told me something interesting.”

Ohno groaned at the knowing smile Nino flashed at him.

Aiba suddenly spoke, his excitement bubbling in like that of a girl egging her friend on to tell her about all the juicy details of her first meeting with her destined guy. “Is it true that you're crushing on Jun-chan's cousin?”

It wasn't a good idea to show these people any expression that would give them more reasons to push further on this matter, but Ohno couldn't help but to blush when the memory of Shoko's smile came to mind.

And as expected, his reaction made his two friends even more interested in his barely-existent lovelife.

“Yakiniku!” Aiba piped up. “You should take her out to eat yakiniku!” But his suggestion earned him a smack in the head from Nino. “As if that'd make for a great first date, stupid!”

“I don't see anything wrong with that though. It'll be fun~ and yakiniku is yummy!” Aiba whined but managed to avoid Nino's incoming attack, sticking a tongue out to him when Nino scowled.

Turning to face him, Nino suggested, “J said Shoko-chan likes Italian. Go for pizza and pasta.”

Ohno pretended not to listen, not because he wasn't even the tiniest bit intrigued by the ideas being thrown around, it was really more because in his mind, he was screaming at his friends, is it even any of your business?!

He's already a grown man. He's fully capable of generating his own ideas on what kind of restaurant he'll be taking Shoko to on their first date, wasn't he? Really, his friends were wasting his sleeptime with all these nonsense.

His senses were already giving up on him and the comfy feeling he was getting from the swaying of his hammock chair was gently lulling him to sleep. Hopefully, his two friends realize how much he needed his rest and decide to let him be so he can dream of Shoko-chan in his sleep.

*

“Yummy~”

Ohno would never admit it in this lifetime, but he was insanely thankful he listened to Nino's advice that he could let go of the fact that his bratty friend did not allow him to fall back to sleep the other day. Shoko really did love Italian food, and eating this pizza and pasta stuff made her cheeks so full she looked like an adorable little hamster that Ohno wanted to take her home that instant and just cuddle her.

During dinner, Shoko talked a lot about her different interests and it surprised Ohno that the two of them shared a common love for food. Shoko wasn't really on the fat side but she was slender enough for Ohno to think of her as sexy. Well, to be honest, her body size didn't matter much to Ohno. He was that attracted to Shoko.

Ohno was astonished by the fact that he didn't find Shoko talking too much as annoying. He actually found it oddly endearing. It was also an added bonus that his silence didn't seem to bother Shoko as well. He figured, they really might be a good match; at least that's what he would like to believe.

Ohno didn't have to think twice when he decided to ask her out again. It felt natural to be with Shoko that he wanted to spend more and more of his me time with the woman. When Shoko agreed to meet him once more, warmth spread through his chest and a smile easily formed on his lips.

*

Jun quietly observed his friend's expression. He was used to seeing the absent-minded look on Ohno's face, but this time, it was more like the man was in a daze and from time-to-time, he would giggle like a lovestruck fool. It was kinda cute.

“She got you hard, didn't she?” He offhandedly asked, not really expecting to hear any response from the dazed man. “Hn.” Ohno hummed in reply and Jun raised a brow at his seemingly preoccupied friend.

Right then and there, Ohno perked up and slapped his face with both hands. Game face on. Jun was quite shocked by Ohno's sudden actions.

“Yosh! I've decided.” Ohno announced, determination burning in his eyes. Before Jun could even ask, Ohno continued, and his words were so out-of-character that Jun was inclined to stare at him for a good three minutes to even take in the fact that it was Ohno who said them.

“I am going to be your cousin!”

“Eh?”

*

Their first date was merely dinner. This time, Ohno came extra early to pick Shoko up at Jun's house, hiding a bouquet of lilies at his back.

It was Jun who opened the door, a smirk splayed on his lips at the unusual show of gentlemanliness from his best friend. When he called Shoko, he was tempted to watch their interaction from the side; it would make for a great story for their other friends later. But then Ohno shot him a piercing gaze and he backed away, stepping further into the house.

Once Jun was out of sight, Ohno took out the bouquet he had prepared for his beautiful date, and the lady clasped her hands together in delight, “Oh my!” before she gladly accepted the flowers. “Thank you, Ohno-san.” She was so adorable that had Ohno not reigned in his senses quickly, he would've embraced the young lady at that instant.

They opted to set the bouquet in a vase first before heading out to the cab that was waiting for them at the street. It was a wise thing to do, considering it would be troublesome to have to carry it as they watched a movie.

He heard from Jun that upon seeing the commercial of a certain movie, Shoko's eyes lighted up and her cheeks were stretched out into a smile. Movies weren't really something Ohno cared much about but if Shoko wishes to see one, he would readily accompany her even to the dullest, most boring movie ever.

“That was really interesting, wasn't it?”

“Hn.”

More than the movie itself, Ohno's attention was actually focused on his date. In the darkness of the movie house, the light from the film would illuminate Shoko's face, her profile, her expressions. It was really more amusing to him than the people making up a story on the screen in front of them.

Dinner was at a fancy French restaurant Jun recommended. His friend deemed it best to step in before Ohno could decide on taking on Aiba's yakiniku idea; an intervention that Ohno truly appreciates now that they were here. A fitting place for the objective he had in mind.

Shoko was acting normal, the way she talked about random stuff after she had spilled out all her ideas about the movie, wasn't any different from their previous date; her animated gestures as she described things weren't particularly new. But even then, Ohno couldn't help but be fidgety in his seat. He was too concerned about the loud beating of his heart that he didn't realize Shoko had stopped talking midway into their conversation until she asked,

“Is anything wrong, Ohno-san?”

It was a good thing he had finished his meal, but still, he swallowed the imaginary lump in his throat.

The timing seemed right. He might not get another chance like this later on.

He had meant to take things step by step; carefully considered the kind of words he should use. In his mind everything was already set; it was actually disgruntling to have things progress exactly as he had planned. And to think, he rarely plans things. The fear of messing up now felt incredibly real.

Shoko looked a tad bit concerned at his silence, tilting her head a little to the right and peeking at his face through long eyelashes. The gesture was too endearing that his breath hitched.

“I like you! Marry me.”

For a brief second, he felt relieved at finally saying the words. But then Shoko's eyes were wide open, and she was gaping at him. With a confused stare, and a little bit of anxiousness, he stared back, creases forming between his eyebrows.

“Uhm, Ohno-san...” Shoko began, cheeks flaring red as she tried not to meet Ohno's gaze. Ohno hummed in reply.

“Marriage is a bit... impossible for me right now but...”

The shy glances Shoko was darting at him along with the strange things she was saying didn't help ease his confusion. Marriage? Why would she even think of that? Isn't it too early?

But then he thought back on what he said earlier. If he recalls correctly, he said he likes her and asked her to mar-- Fuck. He panicked, raising his hands in the air as if to erase the words in the imaginary blackboard between them. “That's not what I meant!” He tried to correct himself, but Shoko felt a little bit offended by his words. “Ah no. I meant, I was going to ask you to date me! And that marriage thing-- we'll get there eventually!”

The way he moved was far too clumsy that Shoko could no longer contain her amusement, she burst in a fit of giggles. She reached out for Ohno's flailing hands and calmly held them. With an even brighter smile Ohno had ever seen, Shoko faced him, nodded, and in a small voice she said,

“Please take care of me from now on, Satoshi-kun.”

His hold on her hand tightened, and with his thumb pressing warmth on her skin, he whispered,

“You really are... so beautiful.”

*

“So, cousins, huh?” Jun probed.

“Hn. Eventually.” Ohno concurred.

“Well, you're like brothers already.” Nino added.

Aiba then pulled the three of them in a sort of hug and whined, “That's nice~ I want to be cousins with you guys too~”

Drawing back, Ohno moved away from then and stood next to his girl, reaching out for her hand and caressing her skin with his thumb, and in a small voice he warned, “You'd have to find another relative of Jun to marry. Shoko-chan is mine.” Aiba feigned offense, but soon a wide grin replaced the pout on his lips.

The proud expression along with the possessive tone and words made Shoko blush, and the hooting sounds the other three around them produced, made her giggle, her hold on Ohno's hand tightening all the while.
