Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is oddly enjoyable. I say oddly because it isn't as good as Princess Tutu or Jubei-Chan: Secret of the Lovely Eyepatch but it's also completely lacking in the underlying madness that helps set those two apart from traditional magical girl shows (Tutu in particular has insanity literally lurking beneath the surface of it's plot while Jubei-Chan is more slapstick and has lovely fight scenes, particularly in season two).
On the other hand, the characterization is solid and fight scenes are both common and lovingly done while the schmaltzy themes are not overplayed as they so often are in such things. High powered magical battles make everything more enjoyable, after all.
