Ian/Wanda with the prompt 'brand new'.
It was difficult to keep the jealousy at bay.
Logically, Ian reminded himself that things were different now -- Melanie was back with Jared and Wanda had her own brand new body, one which was free to love him, one which wouldn't hold her back from her feelings. And she did love him. He knew that.
When he lay in bed alone at night, however, the uncertainty was hard to dispel. Melanie's body had only been part of the problem. Ian had worked out long ago that there was a part of Wanda herself that had loved Jared (that loved him still?) and fool that he was, it still tormented him every night that Wanda spent apart from him.
Did she dream of him, as he did of her? If he kissed her -- really kissed her, the way he had on the night he'd nearly lost her -- how would she react now? Would she agree to share his room if he asked her? Kyle had been talking of taking over Walter's space. He had plans to widen it so that he and Sunny could live there comfortably.
Could he and Wanda be comfortable together in one room?
He thought of the way she seemed to tiptoe around him, her shyness and hesitance. He'd seen her look at Jared sometimes, her expression bewildered, and it made him irrationally angry at Jared when he met Wanda's eyes with a piercing gaze.
Give her time, he told himself. We have time. He'd told her from the start, after all -- he didn't mind waiting for her to think things through. And now, time was on their side.
The monsoon arrived, bringing with it the move to the game room. Everyone else had mattresses, but Wanda had been sleeping on a cot in the hospital. Maybe it was better that way -- less awkward. Ian was sure that if she thought he wanted it, Wanda would obligingly set her mattress next to his if she had one, the way all the other couples did.
There was no question at all that he did want her next to him, but he wanted more for it to come from her.
Jamie Stryder, however, was utterly shameless about what he wanted.
'You don't really want that cot, do you, Wanda?' The kid shoved his mattress next to Ian's and grinned at them. Ian narrowed his eyes slightly. Did Jamie think he was being subtle?
'Oh, hey, Ian, I talked to Brandt and Aaron, and I think I'm going to move in with them.'
Not so subtle, then. Ian counted to ten slowly in his head before he took a deep breath and reached for Wanda's hand. It was so tiny, he could close his fingers completely around it. He didn't let go, even after they'd settled themselves side by side.
'Is this okay?'
'Yes, thank you,' she said politely. Ian groaned inwardly, wishing he could tell for sure if she truly meant it, or simply didn't wish to hurt his feelings. What did she really want from him? Give me a hint, Wanda, damn it!
There was a soft thump as on Wanda's other side, Jamie rolled about. Wanda shifted closer, bumping into Ian as she did.
Perhaps it was the feel of her body, even so briefly, against his that did it. His arms moved to encircle her, wanting instinctively to hold on to this precious girl who was so very close now. She turned in his arms.
'Is this okay?' she whispered back to him, and there was a tinge of hopefulness in her voice. As though she wanted him to keep on holding her close. Ian felt happiness swell in his heart.
'Better than okay,' he assured her with a light kiss. Now, he thought. Now's the time to ask.
And when it turned out that they'd both been utter fools, misunderstanding each other's need for time, he felt only joy and relief. She loved him. She wanted him.
Once, he'd kissed her in Melanie's body and felt the deep, stirring glimmers of her passion. Now, it erupted between them, a powerful volcano spreading heat across their skins like molten lava.
When they parted at last, they were both gasping.
'Oh, Ian,' she breathed.
'Are you happy, Wanderer?'
'Perfectly,' she replied, wrapping her arms around him. He tightened his hold around her, content in the knowledge that they had the rest of their lives to be together now.
