Summary: Professor Sprout considers Neville.
As a teacher, you're not supposed to play favourites, but Pomona couldn't help having a soft spot for several of her students.
Although Neville hadn't been a Hufflepuff, he was one of them. It wasn't just that he excelled at Herbology -- although Pomona admitted that she might not have noticed him otherwise. Shy and unassuming, he was the kind of boy who tried to blend in, succeeding in most cases.
She had encouraged his skill and talent, allowed his fingers to cultivate life in her greenhouses. And though his bumbling awkwardness made other teachers despair during his early years at Hogwarts, the hard work he put into every task he undertook (such a very Hufflepuff trait!) gained her respect.
Almost everyone, Pomona included, had wondered at some point why Neville wasn't a Hufflepuff. Pomona certainly wished he he'd been one, but she must have been the first (well, apart from Dumbledore, but who could ever claim to be more prescient than the late Headmaster?) to realise that the Sorting Hat hadn't been wrong with this boy.
After all, it took courage to plod on day after day when you had to stand up to classmates and teachers who put you down on a regular basis, whether intentional or not. Neville never gave up. And knowing what she did of his history, it seemed to Pomona that facing each day with spirit took quite some grit.
It had been very obvious to her: Neville might seem as fragile as a Flutterby bush, but inside, he had the mettle of dittany. Resilience was seeded within.
When at last it blossomed, she was not at all surprised.
