HP Drabble Tree All it took was a single tear, rolling down his cheek. Hannah felt the burn of hatred flare under her skin. So far this year, she'd felt hurt and anger and despair when it came to the Carrows, but for the first time, she longed to Crucio one of them for making Neville -- brave, heroic Neville -- cry.
It was funny -- in a way that was strange and utterly devoid of humour -- how he'd taken beatings and curses and the worst forms of physical torture from the Carrows and faced it with strength and courage that gave the rest of them hope, but that taunt from Alecto about his parents seemed like the hardest, most shattering blow Neville had ever suffered.
He looked like he was breaking, and Hannah thought there was something terrible painful about watching him cry now, as though each drop that fell from his eyes were searing into her heart like acid. It scared her -- if Neville, who they had all come to count on as the bravest among them, the leader of their little resistance, were to fall apart now, what hope did the rest of them have?
It was selfish, but she didn't want to see him like this.
'They're just words, Neville,' she said hesitantly, trying to console him.
He turned his tear-streaked face to her. 'You don't understand,' he said flatly. The tone of his voice scared her -- it sounded low, empty.
'My mum is dead too. And maybe they were there when ... when it ...' To her horror, she found her voice cracking, and she struggled to keep herself calm. 'I'd be sad if they insulted her like that, but I know they can't hurt her any more.'
'That's ...' he paused as if just catching on to something she'd said. 'Wait, you think my parents are dead?'
'Aren't they?' She'd always assumed so, as everyone had known he'd been raised by his gran. Neville had never indicated otherwise.
Neville looked down, as though unable to meet her gaze. He was silent for a long while. Finally -- 'No,' he said. 'They ... they're ... in St Mungo's.'
'I don't understand,' whispered Hannah. 'What ...'
Neville sighed. 'They're insane,' he said bitterly.
