Colin made it a point to notice things. You couldn't be a good photographer if you walked around half-blind to your surroundings. And since he enjoyed taking pictures of people most, he paid a lot of attention to the people around him.
He had always thought that Romilda Vane had a particularly striking appearance. Her long dark hair framed a pale face with sharp, well-defined features and dark eyes which looked as though they could be quite sharp in noticing things -- if the owner wished to do so, that was. Hers was a face that Colin imagined would show up well in still photography.
At the moment, though, Colin was not pondering Romilda's photogenic qualities. As he watched her passing what must have been a very amusing magazine among a group of friends, he was trying to reconcile the devil-may-care expression with the pinched, worried look he'd seen on the Hogwarts Express.
'Earth to Colin!' A hand came down in front of his face and waved about. Ginny Weasley descended into the chair next to him, grinning. 'It's not like you to be so spaced out.'
'Sorry,' he said sheepishly. 'Hi Ginny.'
'What's got you so entranced, then?' She glanced over at Romilda's group and frowned. 'Honestly. You'd never guess that a war was going on, with that lot.'
'Well, we all want to do something now and then to forget.'
Ginny sighed. Colin imagined she was thinking of Harry. Her eyes drifted back to the giggling girls and narrowed as they focused on Romilda. 'I wonder if they ever remember. Or care,' she muttered contemptuously before turning back to Colin. 'Don't you forget the meeting tonight.'
'Of course not.' Colin fingered the DA Galleon which he always kept in his pocket. Ginny nodded and rose to her feet.
'I'll see you later,' she said. 'I need to find Neville. Be careful getting to the Room -- you're running a greater risk than the rest of us.'
'I've got Disillusionment down pat,' Colin promised. 'See you.'
A whole crowd of students moving together would have been too conspicuous even with Disillusionment Charms, especially with Snape and the Carrows lurking around, so the members of the DA tended to stagger their movements, leaving in no more than pairs. Colin made sure Dennis was safe with an older student, then waited around for an opportune moment to make his exit.
Romilda's group of fifth-year girls got up and headed to the girls' dormitory staircase when he decided to go. They passed, none of the other girls paying much attention to him except for Romilda. She gave a soft, surprised little gasp and hesitated while her friends disappeared up the steps, her cheeks flushing slightly. When their eyes met, the carefree look lingering on her face seemed to slide away to reveal the same anxiety that he felt these days -- that they all must feel.
Ginny's wrong. She does worry. She does care.
In a heartbeat, he'd made a decision. A risky one -- Romilda hadn't been tried or tested. And Ginny would be furious if he brought her. Yet the same instinct that had caused him stand up for her on the Hogwarts Express persuaded him now to take the chance.
Romilda started to walk past him, but he caught her arm quickly.
'Come with me,' he said earnestly.
