1. Carlisle had been absolutely sincere - no single dishonest thought even crossed his mind as he explained to Edward the events, the reasons behind his creation.

Edward understood. He supposed he was even thankful to the doctor for saving his life. But he could not help the fear that gripped him as he tried to look ahead, towards an existence where he would be forever a slave to this foreign thirst.

He watched the turn of the year with apprehension: what would this new year, the first year of his new life, bring?

2. The monster planned to take advantage of the crowd's distraction, counting on the noise of the party to cover the screams of his prey.

He hadn't reckoned on Edward, whose mind was perfectly attuned to this dastardly plan. Edward, who closed in on the pair, stalking closer, almost intoxicated with the aroma of blood, flowing so fast in the monster's veins.

The prey, the helpless young girl, was chalk-white with terror. (Good, easier to resist the temptation to feed on her too.) Edward barely threw her a glance as he descended on the monster.

A bloodcurdling shriek rang through the air, unheard by the crowd in the main square as they chanted their countdown.

As the year turned, Edward looked down at the man (No, the monster!) he had destroyed.

3. He looked down at the crowd of people gathered before the clock tower, ready to party as the enormous clock hands inched towards the sky. And even though his thirst did not dissipate - it never would, he knew - Edward turned away from the warm, sweet-smelling blood of his prey.

He was going home.

Carlisle and Esme would be happy to see him, he thought, and felt comforted. For the first time since he'd left them, he felt as though the New Year had promise again.

4. When the clock struck twelve, he did not think, one more year, nor one more day even.

One more hour.

It was pathetic, how he was counting in terms of hours now. But time that had once passed so comfortably now dragged by endless second by endless second. An eternity of this without her seemed unberarable.

No, not eternity, he reminded himself. As long as she lived ... which was an altogether different thing.

Still, that should be a long time yet, and the way time had slowed to nearly a standstill, it might as well be eternity.

Edward curled up into a ball and let the crackle of fireworks outside be drowned out by the echo of Bella's voice in his head.

5. Edward pressed a kiss to the hollow of her neck. Bella sighed happily and snuggled up against him.

Part of him still missed the warmth of her, the very human flush of her cheeks and the coursing of tantalising blood through her veins, but he couldn't deny that the way they were together now was much easier. She touched her lips to his, and it was pure bliss, the luxury of kissing her with abandon.

'Happy New Year,' he breathed against her cold lips.

When you've been alive for centuries, one would assume New Year ceases to be anything special: just a day marking the turn of another year. When measured in the span of eternity, it has no more significance than a person might grant the passing of a second.

To Edward, however, even a second of this eternity - a forever with Bella by his side - was worth celebrating.
