On Harry Potter’s second birthday, Remus baked a cake and brought it to Harry’s parents. He set it down on the ground, lit two candles, and just sat there, watching the flames dance on the wicks, melting the wax.
‘I’d go visit him,’ he said, conversationally, after a minute, ‘but Dumbledore … well, I’m sure you know.’ He wondered if they did know. If Lily and James were watching from somewhere. He tried to imagine their faces, and for a moment he thought he could see them; Lily’s smile and James’s grin flickering in the candle flames.
He wondered if he’d really brought the cake - with the two candles - for Harry, or his parents.
‘I’m leaving soon,’ he told them. ‘There’s nothing left here for me.’ Remus wasn’t sure why he felt the need to explain that he was leaving the country; the only people who would care were dead - or as good as - and wouldn’t offer him solace or advice.
Still, it gave him some sense of closure. It has been almost a year - time to let go, leave the past be.
‘Goodbye,’ he said. He left the cake there, a final offering, not waiting to watch the candles melt away, the flames flickering out only when their fuel was gone.
