'It's a matter of house pride,' said Megan crossly. 'We ought to be loyal to Hufflepuff.'
Susan snatched up the badge from Megan's outstretched palm, clearly nettled by the slight against her Hufflepuff loyalty. 'Of course I support Cedric,' she snapped.
Hannah hesitated. She had no qualms about the message on the badges Megan was passing around; Cedric was Hogwarts' real Triwizard Champion, after all, and she did support him. However, the fact that the badges had come from Draco Malfoy was enough to give her pause without knowing that behind the face message was a nasty, direct jibe at Harry.
Surely she could be loyal to her House Champion without being ugly about it to a fellow school mate?
'Go on, Hannah,' urged Megan. 'Hufflepuff should stick together in this!'
Reluctantly, Hannah took the badge. Megan beamed and hurried off to heckle Wayne and Justin.
'Are you going to wear it?'
Susan shrugged. 'I suppose so. It won't hurt. Just don't press the things. Have you seen what they say when you do?'
Hannah nodded. 'It's awfully mean.'
'Well, Malfoy made them. I don't think he supports Cedric so much as hates Harry.'
'Doesn't it feel wrong, then, wearing his badges?'
Susan glanced down at her badge. 'When you put it that way ...'
'I don't know why it's such a big deal, anyway. This tournament's just another competition, isn't it?'
'You're right, Hannah. Besides, we know Harry doesn't stand a chance.' She tossed the badge into her bag. 'No need to rub it in.'
