The summons is almost expected -- they've been waiting for something to happen since Terry Boot, who's supposed to be in hiding along with the older members of the DA, broke into the Great Hall and announced that Harry Potter just broke into Gringotts and escaped on a dragon.

The announcement was met by riotous cheering, of course, and Snape and the Carrows' rage. Terry ran for it, there was pandemonium in the Great Hall, and Snape only managed to restore order by casting a Hall-wide Body-Bind. The students were ordered back to their common-rooms and an instant curfew issued even though it was only seven.

No one in Gryffindor Tower can go to bed with such exciting news. Some of the younger kids do retire to their dormitories, but the common room is packed with Gryffindors from third year up, all eagerly discussing Harry Potter.

'A dragon -- d'you think Boot was having us on?'

'Don't be absurd -- why'd he risk it if it weren't true?'

'D'you think he'll come here?'

'Things are going to happen soon, I can feel it!'

It's past eleven when Jack Sloper, who's been spinning his DA Galleon idly in his palm, lets out a sharp yelp.

'He's back!' cries Jack.

No one has to ask who 'he' is. Romilda pulls out her own Galleon.

Get ready

Everyone turns to look at Colin, who has become the de facto DA leader in Gryffindor since the seventh-years and Ginny went into hiding. Romilda feels a rush of pride to be standing by his side.

'Ready to fight, guys?' says Colin. 'It's time to pay back those Death Eaters.'

Thus it is that Professor McGonagall arrives in the common room half an hour later to find all of Gryffindor Tower already roused and planning battle strategy.

'Professor!' calls Colin. 'Is the fight beginning? Have you seen Neville?'

A look of exasperation crosses McGonagall's face, but all she says is, 'All of you are to proceed immediately to the Great Hall. This is an emergency!'

The thrill of excitement that has been hanging over their heads breaks and floods through them as Colin leads Gryffindor house to the Great Hall. The rest of the school is filing in, all four tables crowded. Every one of the DA who has been hiding out in the Room of Requirement has reappeared, and the teachers are joined on the raised platform by a growing crowd of adults -- it must be the Order of the Phoenix.

And then Professor McGonagall starts to talk about evacuation.

Evacuating. Running away to safety the moment You-Know-Who shows up. What sort of cowards would they be? Fortunately, Ernie Macmillan gets up for all those who want to fight.

'If you are of age, you may stay,' says Professor McGonagall.

'That's bollocks!' growls Colin. 'Less than twenty of the DA are of age -- they're going to need more people to hold back You-Know-Who. Some of us have to stay!'

Professor McGonagall ignores the outcry to answer questions about belongings and Snape -- it takes a while for Romilda to process everything. They're rid of Snape already? And is that Harry Potter coming down the aisle now? And-

'I know that you are preparing to fight.'

Startled, Romilda lets out a shrill scream at the sound of the high, cold voice suddenly reverberating around the Hall. She isn't the only one to take fright, but she clamps her hand quickly over her mouth, angry at herself for scaring so easily. There's no doubt that the voice is of You-Know-Who, as he continues to speak, demanding that they hand over Harry Potter by midnight.

Ha, he wishes! Romilda is one of the first to her feet when Parkinson yells to grab Harry -- but all that happens is that the evacuation begins.

Next to her, Colin sits and stays firmly in his seat -- along with half of Gryffindor, some of whom are not even members of the DA.

'Off you go!' snaps McGonagall. She chivvies them along, prodding Romilda with the back of her wand as she nearly drags her out. Colin's protests are in vain, as she gives him a push so hard he nearly stumbles -- Romilda catches his arm to steady him.

They troop out of the Great Hall with the other under-age Gryffindors. Behind them, they can hear the adults laying out the battle plans. The prefects in charge of leading the evacuation are far ahead. Romilda catches Colin breaking away from the tide of students bearing them down the corridor and quickly hangs back with him in the shadows of the doors to the Great Hall.

'Are you staying?'

'Of course,' he says. 'But Milly -- I'll be seventeen in two months. I'm practically of age. You're still --'

'I'll be seventeen this year, too!' she snaps as she realises what he's trying to say to her. 'And you know I can do all the stuff you can. Don't try to send me away!'

'But-'

She clamps her hand over his mouth. 'Some people need to stay and fight,' she reminds him. 'And I'm no coward.'

Colin reaches up slowly and pulls her hand down. Then he takes her chin and draws her mouth to his.

'Of course you're not,' he whispers before their lips touch, charged with an intensity that none of their previous kisses have held.

She's gasping at the end of it, when several hoots and laughter alert them to the fact that others have joined them. Others are staying, too -- their fellow DA members from all houses, as underage as they are, but no less ready to do their bit. The doors of the Great Hall are starting to open again -- the Hogwarts defenders will be out in a moment. Midnight is approaching.

'C'mon,' says Romilda boldly. 'We've got a battle to fight!'
