the warmth you bring

it's supposed to be an innocent answer to an innocent question.
"Erza," Jeral asked her one day when they managed to get away from the slave drivers, just for a moment to be alone. "What do I remind you of?" And Erza stared at Jeral, confusion written all over her face. That was a silly question. She opened her mouth to tell him so, but his face was serious. She bit her lip in thought.
Jeral was Jeral. There was nothing else to it. Besides, it's not like Erza's seen a lot of the world anyway, so she can't really compare him to much. Erza's mind wandered, trying to place Jeral's face to a word, an object, an answer that would satisfy him.
"Sunshine." It came out of her mouth without her thinking about her and the two of them are both surprised. "Sunshine!" she repeated eagerly and wrapped her hand around Jeral's wrist. Jeral blinked at her, cheeks turning a shy pink.
"…Why?" he prodded curiously. Erza considered this. Now he wanted to know why? Jeral sure was demanding. But it was okay, this was easier to answer than the first one.
"Because," she said cheerfully. "I live in a dark place. It's so cold and scary, the sun is too scared to shine here. But it's okay!" she added quickly when she saw Jeral's sudden dark expression. "It doesn't matter because when there are people like Jeral here…"
Suddenly, Erza's embarrassed. This was supposed to be an innocent answer to an innocent question. Not a disarray of mixed emotions topped with Jeral looking at her like, like, oh she didn't know.
"When there are people like Jeral," Erza continued in a small voice. "The sun doesn't have to shine."
Jeral's eyes were glistening with something unrecognizable. He opened his mouth. "Erza I-" he coughed a bit and gripped her hands earnestly. "I-" And something built up in the pit of Erza's stomach, anticipating, waiting. She leaned forward. "I-"
"What the hell are you brats doing here?" They both froze when they saw the slave driver towering over them, a cruel sneer etched on his face. He snapped his whip angrily on Jeral's shoulder and Erza's heart stopped for a moment. "Get back to work you useless pieces of crap."
Wordlessly, Jeral took Erza's hand and they walked off together, back into line, handcuffs separating them. Erza attempted to look at Jeral one more time, but his head was bowed. She sighed.
"I love you." She's unconscious and it's different now, the two of them are different now, but he finally managed to say it nonetheless. Jeral stared at Erza's figure for a moment and pushed down any feelings of regret.
I love you.
