Have attention span of neurotic crack-addled ADD fruit fly. Sorry. If anyone needs me to see anything/needs to tell me anything, please email. I'll... probably reply in a few days or so, unless it's urgent, of course.
And, so I'm 3/4 through A Clash of Kings now, and some thoughts because it's EATING MY BRAIN. Or, you know, because I'd rather read paper than screens right now.
-I know it's terrifically slow of me to only be commenting on this now, but I do like how subtly he reinforces that the Starks are supposed to be on the Wall, for the keeping of the North, etc by sneaking in the way that wolves (and dire wolves) are constantly what 'wake the sleepers'. that's referring to the Vow, isn't it? it's been ages (nearly six months) since i read the first book so i was a bit fuzzy about what happened and when and to who after that time, given there are SO many characters.
-And I fully realise it's probably something of a red herring, but Ser Barristan Selmy's gone after either Gendry or Daenerys, hasn't he? Because he's not with anyone else and he was sworn to Robert (and to Aerys Targaeryon before, right? and oh god, don't judge me for spelling please, people, it's too late to double check these things. aughvowels.) Uh... yeah. I just wanted to put my guess down before I found out a nay or yay for sure. Though, really, I suppose it's easily inside the bounds of happening that we never ever find out because people do just vanish, sometimes, especially in times of war.
-I know I'm supposed to anyway, but ARGH Joffrey is so stupid and venal and AWFUL that I want to punch him a lot. Just... god. I think it's probably fair to say so far that the moral of the story is "bring your kids up right otherwise it will all go horribly wrong" as that seems to apply across the board. Urgh. And given reactions I've seen, I'm very very curious to find out what happens with/what changes for Jaime Lannister because we haven't heard from him for nearly a book now.
-I actually for the most part like Tyrion quite a lot so far. Though I feel this could be very dangerous because I know, I know that I have to be very careful because he's not Miles and he's not meant to be Miles and I don't need to slip into expecting him to act on that template. Because that way leads urk. I'm also very much less judgmental of Sandor Clegane - which again, could absolutely be setting us up for something, but he's interesting and in so many ways he's freaking consistent both to the reader and to the people he interacts with. He shouldn't be as reassuring a character, given his background/history/actions/motivations as he sort of is. I am so not explaining this well.
-So, so SO damn curious who Jon Snow's mother is. Have we heard of her yet (do we know)? I just want a yes or no, not who she is, because normally at this point in a fantasy series I have some pretty solid clues about where things are headed but right now I got nuthin' in that respect, which is sort of refreshing and sort of depressing in that "oh please don't go Robert Jordan on us" sort of way.
-He (Martin) also does a good job juggling all the threads because every time the narrator changes I go "ARGH BUT I WANTED TO KNOW--" and then promptly get sucked in to the new one, lather rinse repeat. It's like Return of the King except without Sam and Frodo occasionally making me all "yes, I know this is sort of important. okay, vital. okay, the main point. but I want to know what everyone else is doing!!" er. yes.
-Going to bed to read more now whoo! Oh, and if anyone (all two of you who've read it, I think?) is curious, Daenerys has just sort of set fire to the Palace of the Undying. I slightly want to stay up to finish this book, but then if I do that then I've nothing to read tomorrow at work (everything else I'm reading right now - and god, the pile by my bed is getting scary - is sort of too 'good' (in terms of expensive or white covers or Not Mine) to take to work and run the risk of covering in rock dust). And, more importantly, I know for a fact they don't have book three at the bookstore so I'd have to order it and that's usually six weeks unless the local distributor has one, but ninety times out of a hundred we have to order from Australia/America through a central depot instead of being able to go directly to the publishers and argh.
And scratch part of that, because Zak just threw up in like five places between here and the kitchen. Ick. And argh, because normally he's good about staying on the lino until I can put him out but no, this was ALL CARPET. Poor baby. Also? Ick. Though, okay, small mercies - he didn't, so far as I can tell (and I checked, exhaustively) throw up on my BED, which is where he was. Urk.
