(HP) To Contend With Shadows - SS/DM - 1/?
Here's the first bit of an untitled series.

Severus turned away from his study of the perimeter to focus on the man sleeping in front of the fire. He was a man now. The intervening years had brought not only physical changes. He was both more and less himself than he had been at 16. Still fair with pale hair, but the youth’s open and assured façade had been replaced with wariness about the eyes and the pinched look of someone hunted and desperate. Which wasn’t so very far from the truth.
Satisfied that the wards and camouflaging spells would hold, Severus used these moments of solitude to plan their next course of action.
With the war now months past, and most of the surviving Death Eaters safely housed in Azkaban, the Wizarding World was finally regaining a sense of normalcy. But the end of war did not simplify things for Severus. It merely left him and his companion with even fewer choices. It is a simple enough prospect to cover one’s tracks and remain hidden when everyone else around you is focused on killing or being killed. This new stability only meant that those who hunted them would have more time to refine their search.
No, only two options were available to them. Reveal themselves, gambling on a public indifferent to the existence of wizards with questionable allegiance, or truly go underground - committing to a lifetime on the run.
Severus sat, contemplating the diverging paths laid ahead of them. He pondered the variables, determining factors and potential outcomes until the blazing fire had become mere embers. Still unresolved, he once again checked the wards before joining his companion for some much-needed rest.
