Okay, first, new tidbit translated from SW3E:
Hanbei: Let's see... This looks familiar, so it must be over here... Oh, it's the princess! Princess, are you going to the hot springs?
Nou: Yes, I am. By the way, Hanbei, are you lost again?
Hanbei: No way, princess! You know I can't lose my way anymore. I'm always walking around with the compass you gave me, remember?
Nou: That's right. You aren't called Crybaby Hanbei anymore because of it. Now you're called the All-knowing, Flying Peeping Tom Hanbei, right?
I.
This game.
So Nou gave him his weapon. And I guess his directional sense might be bad? (Except that it's Hanbei and I would frankly not be surprised if he just found "lost" to be a convenient pretext to explain why he was in places people didn't want him to be. Or if he were just trolling because it's funny.) Not helping me with my guilty pleasure crackshipping here, Koei.
And apparently it is in fact a compass that he hits people with and not a sundial. Am now contemplating renames because that's going to bother me forever. Suggestions welcome. 8( sundialed ->
shigeharu. how the fuck was that not taken already.
Okay, to lead into this second thing: I have been kind of ignoring the fact that Hanbei historically is known to have had a wife and a son. I actually do the same for Jiang Wei (wife and two daughters, in his case); it is no greater a stretch than some things Koei has canonized, and due to the complete lack of historical details on most of these people, I find it easier to just go with the game precedent of ignoring their existence, because I don't want to find myself in an IC situation where Jiang Wei is the kind of man who can't remember his own daughters' names because history left them unrecorded, and I'd feel really weird making them up.
Koei ignores these people too, and my definition of "exists in Koei!verse" is very broad. Mentioned in NPC dialogue anywhere, appearing as a generic officer, or even just being mentioned in the history notes in DW's encyclopedia feature are all good enough for me. Jiang Wei's family aren't mentioned in any dialogue (and I have meticulously recorded every piece of NPC dialogue in story mode, so I know what I'm talking about). Similarly, on a replay of SW3, I kept an eye out for Hanbei's family, and while his younger brother appeared at Inabayama, I could not find his son in any of the battles he is historically known to have taken part in. I had figured Koei deliberately left him out, since...their character design for Hanbei makes him look like he's freaking fourteen years old, so it would be really weird anyway.
But then I went to finish unlocking battles in SWC.
And I found this.
HI SON.
So...yep. Since his son exists in Koei canon, I am henceforth playing on the assumption that his wife does as well, and amazingly, I was actually able to find a name for her (Tokugetsu-In). So at least I don't have to be like I AM PLAYING A MARRIED MAN! I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT HIS WIFE'S NAME IS.
Instead I just get to be like I AM PLAYING A FATHER WHOSE SON PROBABLY LOOKS OLDER THAN HE DOES. sob.
