The Veronica Mars movie was AMAAAAZING omg. They did a v good job of recapping things without being exposition-y and they included all of the characters I wanted to see and the SPOILER with SPOILER was adorable (I silently flailed in the theater) and it was well-paced and thrilling without too much action. 10/10 would see again. Also I rewatched the first three episodes of the show, and it basically does everything right - just those episodes address overprescription of pills to teens, transphobia, victim blaming, divorce, racism, classism, the madonna-whore double standard American society has for women - and is still incredibly entertaining. You go, Rob Thomas.
In less great things, I got to a chapter of Catch-22 that describes this one general, and he and I are remarkably similar, from our joy in vocabulary to our fixed approach in confronting a new acquaintance (he, deliberately humorous arrogance; me, self-deprecating humor) to our response to chess/military situations (assume there's no realistic way to win/make a difference -> choose an arbitrary, unrelated goal instead). I feel simultaneously caught out and impressed by Heller's percipient grasp of human character. He has such a large cast of characters that he describes in exhaustive detail, and each one is distinct and recognizably some unfortunate person you've run into before.
My sister, who lives in Portland with no internet and is a TV addict, has been watching SGA and calling me about it to have long conversations about how she hates Elizabeth (D:) and loves Ford (DD:) and doesn't understand how her library has 10 copies of each season but still has endless holds on every one (lol). This somehow lead to me looking for Lorne/Parrish fic, which I thought was a pretty established thing in fandom, but is actually kind of a rarepair?? Aaaaanyhow, I finally went back and rewatched Runner, and Lorne and Parrish have an entire scene together! Of just them talking! The denouement of which is Lorne hooking his pinkie finger in Parrish's jacket and pulling him along. That is some season 5 McShep material there. How is there not hella epic fic.
Things like this make me remember that all actors, even the ones playing military types, are drama kids. Touchy feely drama kids, who will grab each other's jackets and briefly caress the small of another dude's back as they walk by like it ain't no thang (no, I will never get over that scene, which also had an attractive woman in it whom McKay went out of his way not to brush by). All of this also just underscores the whole thing where the writers of SGA were busy trying to write an action show and had the actors sort of mime out the relationships on their own bc they couldn't be bothered to give them any lines with feelings in them.
There is an episode of SG-1 where Sam's dad entreats her to reapply to NASA because it's her childhood dream and he's pulled strings for her and he wants to see her be able to go into space before he dies of cancer in a few years. I know he eventually becomes a Tok'ra and is fine (at least for a while), but that situation in general is so tragicomic. Writers, I applaud you. Also in that episode: Spender from The X-Files. lol is all I can say to that.; Sam in a dress uniform!; Daniel being extremely unconvincing in his "loving" interactions with his wife, to whom the Goa'uld gave maternity leave. Oh, Stargate, never change.
